Palace set to replace Hodgson

Crystal Palace, currently 15th in the Premier League, look as though they could be about to part company with boss Roy Hodgson. Hodgson began is second spell in charge of the Eagles in positive fashion last season when he guided the club to safety last season after they had endured a run of 13 matches without a win.

However, this season has been a disappointment with many fans, despite having respect for Hodgson’s past achievements at the club and within the game, feeling that the dismissal of Patrick Vierra and the subsequent appointment of the former England boss, was a backward step.

After losing at home to Chelsea on Monday evening, Palace sit only five points clear of the relegation zone. At the time of writing, Hodgson is red-hot favourite to become the next Premier League manager to leave his post. Palace cancelled their news conference on Thursday morning due to Hodgson having taken ill. He was subsequently admitted to hospital. Reports though suggest that the 76-year-old is set to be dismissed. Betting.com look at the candidates to replace Hodgson in the Selhurst Park dugout.

Oliver Glasner 

Former Frankfurt manager Oliver Glasner is now a strong favourite for the position. Glasner lifted the Europa League with Frankfurt, beating Rangers in a penalty shootout. He followed that up by guiding Frankfurt to the knockout stages of the Champions League last season. He then left after a disappointing end to the season after a run of 10 games without a win. 

Steve Cooper 

The 44-year-old is available after being sacked by Nottingham Forest in December. Cooper is thought to be keen to return to management as soon as possible and could well be open to taking on the Palace job.

Cooper took Forest from bottom of the Championship in September 2021 and led them to promotion to the Premier League via a play-off final win over Huddersfield Town in May 2022. After keeping the club up last season he was dismissed after a bad run in the lead up to the festive period. Palace have players who could fit into the Welshman’s preferred formation, which requires wing-backs and two holding midfield players.

Kieran McKenna 

Northern Irishman Kieran McKenna was previously the favourite before being usurped by Glasner and Cooper. McKenna guided Ipswich Town to promotion from League 1 last season and has the Tractor Boys in the mix at the top of the Championship table this time round.

Graham Potter

Former Brighton and Chelsea head coach Graham Potter has been out of the game since his disappointing spell at Chelsea. However, Potter is respected as a tactically flexible and progressive coach and would be considered an exciting and attractive appointment at a number of Premier League clubs.

Others

Jesse Marsch, Michael Carrick, Jose Mourinho, Scott Parker, Neil Lennon and Gareth Southgate are all considered options. Frank Lampard, Brendan Rodgers, Steve Bruce, Ruud van Nistelrooy and John Terry have been mentioned but are though to be less likely.
