Zverev holds firm in fourth after rousing comeback from Alcaraz

During the third set, Zverev had a chance to serve for victory at 5-3, but Alcaraz staged an impressive comeback to force a tiebreak. Undeterred, Zverev displayed resilience in the fourth set, ultimately clinching the win and setting up a semi-final clash with Daniil Medvedev.

Earlier on the same day, Medvedev faced a tough challenge from Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz, ultimately winning 7-6 (7-4) 2-6 6-3 5-7 6-4. The Russian, aiming for his second Grand Slam title after the 2021 US Open, will now meet Zverev in the semi-finals.

Zverev, who endured a significant ankle injury during the 2022 French Open, reflected on the challenges he faced in his career and expressed gratitude for being back in the top 10 and competing in major semi-finals. The German player also learned that he will face a trial in May over domestic abuse allegations, which he denies.

The men’s semi-finals are scheduled for Friday, featuring the clash between Medvedev and Zverev, as well as defending champion Novak Djokovic facing Italian fourth seed Jannik Sinner. Tennis enthusiasts are eagerly anticipating these high-stakes matchups at Melbourne Park.

Pundits and bookies alike are expecting the winner to come from the semi-final between Novak Djokovic and Jannik Sinner. Alcaraz was many people’s second favourite and with him bowing out Sinner has taken on that mantle despite facing tournament favourite Djokovic in the last four.

At the time of writing Djokovic, gunning for a record-extending 11th Australian Open title, is clear favourite, priced at 8/11 with bet365. Sinner is priced at 3/1 with Medvedev 5/1 and Zverev 8/1. After Zverev’s superb victory over Alcaraz bettors looking for value may just be tempted to take a punt on him causing further upsets.
