Wales host group leaders Turkey in vital qualifier

Wales host Turkey neediing to take maximum points to have any chance of making the finals automatically. They should, however secure a play-off place.

Wales

Wales must win and hope Group D rivals Croatia falter in the final matchday of the Euro 2024 qualifying campaign. Robert Page’s side suffered a potentially devastating blow with an underwhelming draw with Armenia in Yerevan.

Armenia, who beat Wales in Cardiff in June, took the lead after five minutes. Wales were clearly nervous after this but managed to create a few opportunities and equalised just before half time when a long throw from Connor Roberts led to an own goal.

Fit again Brennan Johnson could return to the starting line up, probably in place of David Brooks or Harry Wilson. Aaron Ramsey is still out, so Ben Davies retains the captaincy. Luton Town defender Tom Lockyer is set to come in in place of the suspended Chris Mepham.

Turkey

Turkey have already qualified for the Euros and will provide tough opposition for Wales. The visitors come into the match after a superb 3-2 friendly win over Germany, despite making several changes.

Salih Ozcan, Kerem Akturkoglu and Baris Alper Yilmaz are all likely to come back into the side. Teenager Kenan Yildiz could retain his place after an impressive first senior start against the Germans. Emre Akbaba may also stay in the starting side.

Arda Guler remains sidelined by injury and captian Hakan Calhanoglu misses out with illness.

Prediction

Turkey have been excellent in this qualification campaign. Wales will be desparate for a victory and with home advantage I think that they will give it a good go. It will not be enough though. Score draw.
