Paul vs August: “Problem Child” wants to face seasoned professional fighters

After bouncing back from his first loss to Tommy Fury with a victory over MMA fighter Nate Diaz in August, the 26-year-old Paul holds a record of 7 wins and 1 loss in his fighting career. He claims that he retains his ambition of becoming a world champion.

“I want to gain more experience in the ring by competing against seasoned fighters,” Paul stated.

His opponent, Andre August, boasts a record of 10 wins and 1 loss at the age of 35. The two Americans will square off in a cruiserweight bout scheduled for eight rounds.

August, known for his reserved demeanour, emphasised his focus on action over words: “I don’t talk very much. I’m all about that action. Jake Paul has the money, the fame, the team, and the resources, but he doesn’t have my hunger.”

He confidently added, “When that bell rings, I am going straight for Jake Paul, aiming to ring his bell and send him back to YouTube for good.”

Jake Paul

Paul’s boxing record may sit at 7-1, but the former YouTube star’s CV still lacks a legitimate victory over a professional boxer.

Since he began his boxing career in 2020, Paul has been content to sell tickets and pay-per-view broadcast rights for bouts against former MMA stars, such as Nate Diaz and Tyron Woodley. And the only time Paul did face a boxer, he lost a split decision to Tommy Fury, the younger half-brother of WBC heavyweight champion Tyson.

Paul, who to be fair, has improved. He has trained hard, he is young, he is  an athlete, he hits hard, and seems able to take a punch. He is now attempting to change the previous narrative of his career and gain some credibility.

.’I’m a professional boxer and I want to be world champion, so I need to pursue the path towards greatness against people who have been boxing their whole life,’ Paul said in a statement.

This is where August comes in. The 35-year-old Texan, who Paul is set to face in Orlando, cruiserweight has a  10-1-1 professional record record.

Andre August

Unlike a lot of Paul’s previous opponents August has 10 years experience as a pro, however, it can be argued that his cv is relatively light. He is currently on a five-fight winning streak and he recently overcame previously undefeated cruiserweight prospect Brandon Martin. But that victory, by unanimous-decision, was only his third over a fighter with a successful pro record.

August has a solid hook with either arm, as well as an ability to absorb punches. He has two victories and a draw against opponents making their debuts, and his knockouts of Ramiro Garcia and Jeremie Parks are somewhat undermined by the pair’s combined 6-29-4 record.

August’s only loss came at the hands of Eric Abraham, who scored a TKO win despite going into the fight  with a 3-3 record. Abraham’s record  is now just 7-16.

In addition, December 15 will be the first time August competes in a bout that is scheduled for eight rounds. So while he does have more overall experience than Paul, he’s never fought beyond the sixth, as Paul  has in four of his last five bouts.

August can be described as a journeyman boxer. He should still have the fundamentals and the stylistic advantage to beat Paul if he goes into the fight in the right shape with the right attitude.

Prediction

As modest as August’s professional record is, if he is at his best and approaches the fight with the right attitude he should win. The bookies, however, have Paul as favourite, which may have more to do with the MMA fighters he has beaten than his actual level as a boxer. Despite his win streak, it’s been a while since August’s last KO, so he may have trouble finishing Paul off. And if it lasts the distance he is in unknown territory.

As stated, Paul is a heavy favourite and, given August hasn’t had a KO for a while and Paul seems able to take punches I think it will go the distance. And Paul will do enough in the later rounds to secure a win by split decision. However, given the odds and that August has been a pro for a decade punters looking for value could do worse than have a punt on the Texan.
