Everton plan to appeal after Premier League record sporting sanction
The 10-point penalty, which will be applied immediately, comes after the club were found to have breached the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules.
The punishment is the biggest sporting sanction in the Premier League‘s history and leaves Everton second bottom of the table.
A statement from Everton said it was “both shocked and disappointed” by the ruling, which they described as “wholly disproportionate and unjust”. They intend to appeal against the decision.
Premier League Statement
The Premier League have issed the following statement:
“The Premier League issued a complaint against the Club and referred the case to an independent Commission earlier this year. During the proceedings, the Club admitted it was in breach of the PSRs for the period ending Season 2021/22 but the extent of the breach remained in dispute.
Following a five-day hearing last month, the Commission determined that Everton FC’s PSR Calculation for the relevant period resulted in a loss of £124.5million, as contended by the Premier League, which exceeded the threshold of £105million permitted under the PSRs. The Commission concluded that a sporting sanction in the form of a 10-point deduction should be imposed. That sanction has immediate effect.”
Betting Implications
This morning, prior to the news breaking, Everton were priced at 9/2 to be relegated with bet365. At the time of writing bet365 now have Everton priced at 2/1. After a stuttering start to the season where the club failed to find the net on a regular basis, manager Sean Dyche had seen his team start to pick up points and climb away from trouble, into 14th place. However, they have now dropped to 19th position.
In previous seasons such a large deduction could have meant almost certain relegation for a team in the bottom half of the table, who have battled relegation for the last couple of seasons. However, all three newly promoted teams have struggled to pick up points so the Toffees, who were getting some improved results of late, could maybe drag themselves clear.
Bettors need to look at the impact of not only the loss of the points, but on how it affects the morale of the players and their performances. Many have had the three newly promoted clubs as favourites to go down along with Bournemouth. There may be some value in looking at odds on some of those teams to survive given that Everton have been pulled back into the thick of the relegation scrap.
