Dortmund host Newcastle as shootout for last 16 begins

Dortmand sit in second place in the group, level on points with Newcastle. The Magpies have a superior goal difference, however, Dortmund’s 1-0 win at St James’ Park last month sees them above their rivals on the head to head. The group is extremely tight with the qualification spots for the last 16 and the consolation prize of third place and entry to the Europa League up for grabs.

 Borussia Dortmund

After a couple of draws in the Bundesliga and a disappointing start to their Champions League campaign, Dortmund put together a winning run which put them right in the mix for the title race. After the loss of Jude Bellingham over the summer, BVB have regrouped and look a well drilled, talented side who can press the opposition or play effectively on the counterattack. This tactical discipline and versatility saw them record an impressive Champions League win over Newcastle United at St James’ Park. Progress in the German cup and more Bundesliga points have followed and they will be determined to make home advantage count.

Dortmund’s unbeaten Bundesliga run came to an abrupt end with a 4-0 home defeat to Bayern Munich. Hardly the ideal preparation for a key European game.

Emre Can continues to struggle with the hip issue that he picked up towards the end of the first half against Newcastle two weeks ago, while Mateu Morey and Julian Duranville are continuing their recoveries from knee and thigh injuries respectively.

Borussia Dortmund possible starting lineup:

Kobel; Ryerson, Hummels, Schlotterbeck, Bensebaini; Nmecha, Ozcan, Sabitzer; Reus, Fullkrug, Adeyemi

Newcastle United

Newcastle have managed a series of injuries and suspensions really well to get back on track after a stuttering start to the season. The Magpies have strung an impressive sequence of results together in all competitions and despite their squad being stretched by injuries and suspensions they will be hoping to get a result in Dortmund to put their Champions League campaign back on track.

Newcastle have produced some great results since the last international break with the home game against Dortmund their only defeat in this period. That match was preceded by a thumping win over Crystal Palace and followed up with a battling draw at Wolves in the Premier League, a 3-0 away success against Manchester United in the EFL Cup and, back in the league, a rousing 1-0 in over Arsenal in a fiesty encounter on Gallowgate.

As well as the suspended Sandro Tonali, Harvey Barnes (ankle), Elliot Anderson (back), Jacob Murphy (shoulder), Sven Botman (knee), Matt Targett (hamstring) and Alexander Isak (groin) will not be available. Dan Burn is doubtful with a back injury. It is likely that Kieran Trippier will switch to left-back in the absence of Burn and Targett, with Tino Livramento coming in at right-back, however, Lewis Hall is another option on the left.

Newcastle United possible starting lineup:

Pope; Livramento, Schar, Lascelles, Trippier; Longstaff, Guimaraes, Joelinton; Almiron, Wilson, Gordon

Prediction

Both sides are looking strong, however, it is likely that one will miss out on the last 16. Newcastle are more than capable of going to Dortmund and getting a result, however, given how their squad is stretched at the moment a win might be too much to expect. Equally Dortmund are strong at home and scored a superb victory over Newcastle at St James’ Park. Dortmund will go into the match as favourites but it will be tight. We predict a score draw.
