Depleted Newcastle take on Arsenal

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe has a number of key players unavailable, however, will be attempting to manage his resources in a bid to keep United moving forward. Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta will be hoping to repeat last season’s success where they were only one of two teams to beat Newcastle at St James’ Park.

Newcastle United

Newcastle have managed a series of injuries and suspensions really well to get back on track after a stuttering start to the season. The Magpies, despite missing key players, sit sixth in the table. They will be hoping to at least consolidate this over the season and, if they can manage the extra matches the Champions League brings, try to push into the top four again. Though with an increased number of sides showing consistency and quality there are at least nine teams who will feel disappointed if they finish outside the top six.

Despite their injuries and suspensions Howe rang the changes for Newcastle’s trip to Manchester United in the EFL Cup. An unfamiliar line-up secured a superb 3-0 win, meaning that they go into the Arsenal game buoyant from the win with a number of key men rested and their fringe players full of confidence.

Matt Targett (hamstring) was added to a lengthy injury list after just five minutes at Old Trafford on Wednesday.

Javier Manquillo (groin), Lewis Miley (illness), Alexander Isak (groin), Sven Botman (knee), Elliot Anderson (back), Jacob Murphy (shoulder) and Harvey Barnes (foot) are all out along with the suspended Sandro Tonali.

Joelinton and Joe Willock, both of whom had missed a lot of games with injury this season, both got more vital minutes under their belts against Manchester United.

Arsenal

Arsenal have started the season well and are handily placed to repeat last season’s title challenge, though Arteta will be hoping to find a way to go one better. However, with the re-emergence of Tottenham and Liverpool as genuine contenders it will be easier said than done.

The Gunners are currently in an exclusive club with Manchester City and Liverpool as the only teams to win at Newcastle in the league since Howe took charge almost two years ago.

In contrast to Newcastle, Arsenal endured a frustrating night inthe EFL Cup on Wednesday as they crashed out to London rivals West Ham United. Arteta’s side will be determined to bounce back and get a result at St James’ Park.

Emile Smith Rowe has been ruled out for a number of weeks with a new knee issue.

Thomas Partey (muscle) and Gabriel Jesus (hamstring) remain out and are unlikely to return before the end of November. Jurrien Timber continues to recover from his ACL injury.
