German giants meet in key clash in the title race

In the first Der Klassiker of the season Borussia Dortmund, who were pipped to the title in the final game of last season, travel to Bayern, the team who held them off to secure their 11th straight Bundesliga win.

Borussia Dortmund

After a couple of draws in the Bundesliga and a disappointing start to their Champions League campaign, Dortmund have put together a winning run and are right in the mix for the title race. After the loss of Jude Bellingham over the summer, BVB have regrouped and look a well drilled, talented side who can press the opposition or play effectively on the counterattack. This tactical discipline and versatility saw them record an impressive Champions League win over Newcastle United at St James’ Park. They will be determined to prove that they can show up on the big occasion as they will be determined to prevent Bayern from completing a 12th successive Bundesliga title. After a 3-3 draw with Eintracht Frankfurt in the league, they secured a place in the last 16 of the cup with a 1-0 success over Hoffenheim.

Midfielder Emre Can has missed the last two games with a knee injury after being substituted at Newcastle and is a doubt for Saturday, while Julien Duranville remains sidelined with a thigh problem.

Bayern Munich

Bayern completed an astonishing 11th Bundesliga title in a row and, with the summer addition of Harry Kane, will be looking to make it 12. After such a successful period domestically Bayern will be wanting to make a serious bid for the Champions League and they have started their group campaign very well. Kane looks to have settled and is underscoring this with goals and assists. They are currently second in the league, two points behind Bayer Leverkuesen and know that negotiating a trip to Dortmund in Der Klassiker will give their title credentials a huge boost. However, they suffered a shock cup defeat to third tier side Saarbrucken in the DFB-Pokal on Wednesday. Which is not ideal preparation for a trip to Dortmund.

Matthijs de Ligt could be out for the next four to six weeks with a partial knee ligament tear, and Tarek Buchmann (hamstring) is also out, while Joshua Kimmich will serve a two-match suspension following his red card against Darmstadt.

Dayot Upamecano is a minor doubt with a muscle problem, but the centre-back could return to the first XI at the expense of De Ligt, while Noussair Mazraoui could come in for Bouna Sarr at right-back.

Prediction

There is a rich history between the two clubs and both go into the match in form.Dortmund have home advantage and the Yellow Wall will be willing them to victory. However, Bayern are adept at going to difficult venues and getting results. We predict a score draw.
