England look to secure top spot in Group C

England take on Malta at Wembley as the preparations begin for the Euro 2024 finals after qualification was confirmed with the win over Italy.

England

England have qualified for Euro 2024 and will look to seal top spot in  Group C. The Three Lions are currently in one of their most consistent eras. England implemented a long-term coaching strategy back in 2013 and this has paid dividends with an exciting young team and plenty of promise in the age-group sides. Manager Gareth Southgate has consistently seen his sides reach the later stages of tournaments and has successfully blended experienced players with emerging talent.

England have won five of their six qualifying matches, including a comprehensive 4-0 win in Malta. Unlike previous England sides, Southgate’s team generally put in highly efficient performances against the less fancied nations, often backing up their supremacy with goals. Given the position in the group, however, it would not be surprising if the England boss uses some of his fringe players.

After starring against Italy, Real Madrid’s Jude Bellingham, one of the form players in Europe this season, is one of five recent England withdrawals. A shoulder injury has brought the 20-year-old’s rapid rise to a temporary halt. Also pulling out are Lewis Dunk, James Maddison, Callum Wilson and Levi Colwill, while Marcus Rashford and Kalvin Phillips are yet to link up with the team for personal reasons.

John Stones, Luke Shaw, Ben Chilwell and Reece James are also notable absentees too.

Rico Lewis, Ezri Konsa and Cole Palmer earn their first call-ups. Raheem Sterling, and James Ward-Prowse are not included despite performing well this season.

Malta

Malta have yet to record a point in their Euro 2024 qualifiers and travel to Wembley with only pride to play for. It is likely that they will sit deep and try to frustrate the home side. The last round of fixtures saw the Maltese lose 4-0 to Italy and 2-0 to North Macedonia.

Jamaican-born attacker Kemar Reid isin line for his first cap after gaining Maltese citizenship in October. Malta are boosted by the returns of Teddy Teuma and Jodi Jones, neither of whom were available for October’s fixtures due to injury.

Prediction

England are overwhelming favourites and look set to record another victory. We predict a home win. Bettors might want to look for value by predicting the number of goals. We suggest looking at the odds for and England win and +2.5 or +3.5 goals.
