In a thrilling final round at the Fortinet Championship in Napa, California, 25-year-old American Sahith Theegala clinched his inaugural PGA Tour victory. Theegala commenced the day with a two-shot lead and further solidified his position with three birdies within the first five holes. His final round, marked by seven birdies and three bogeys, culminated in a score of 68.
Justin Thomas, a Ryder Cup captain’s selection, entered the final day in joint second place. However, a challenging front nine saw him tally four bogeys. Despite his efforts, the 30-year-old former world number one concluded with a level par 72, securing a fifth-place finish. Thomas had been searching for his first win of 2023.
The defining moment for Theegala came on the 14th hole, where he sunk a remarkable 20-foot birdie putt, extending his lead to five strokes. This outstanding play ultimately secured his victory, leaving South Korea’s SH Kim in second place, trailing by two shots, and Australia’s Cam Davis a further two shots behind in third.
Thomas’ Ryder Cup colleague Max Homa, the winner for the last two years, was two shots further back after a final round of 69 alongside England’s Callum Tarren and American Matt Kuchar.

Thomas and Homa both had decent tournaments but were probably both hoping for better as they approach the Ryder Cup. The USA arguably have a better team on paper, however, Europe have home advantage and a few players coming into form. Team USA remain favourites, especially to lift the trophy where, as holders, a draw will be good enough, however, the bookies are expecting a close contest.
