Magpies look to regain momentum while Liverpool look to build on steady start

Newcastle United

After a fantastic season in 2022/23 Newcastle United are looking to cement their place as consistent top four challengers. There is also the excitement of their first Champions League campaign in two decades.

The Magpies appear to have recruited wisely and their season got off to a fantastic start with a 5-1 win over Aston Villa. However, defeat away at Manchester City, where boss Eddie Howe admitted his side hadn’t quite been at their best, means that they will be determined to get back to winning ways.

However, Newcastle have been handed an extremely tough start to the season and they face one of only four teams to beat them in the Premier League last season, Liverpool.

Howe will be hoping that Joelinton will be fit to face the Reds after limping out of the defeat at the Etihad. If the Brazilian doesn’t make it then Howe can call upon the likes of Eliot Anderson and Sean Longstaff. Other players who could be brought into the starting line up if Howe chooses to freshen his side up are Harvey Barnes and Callum Wilson. Joe Willock is still expected to be out.

Liverpool

Liverpool’s fifth place finish last season was a disappointment after challenging for the title in recent years. The Reds began the season with a creditable draw at Chelsea and a comfortable home win over Bournemouth as they look to bed in a new look midfield.

Summer signing Alexis Mac Allister was controversially sent off in the win over Bournemouth. The Argentine World Cup Winner was set to  miss the trip to St James’ Park through suspension. However, following an appeal the card was downgraded to yellow and the former Brighton man will be available.

Trent Alexander- Arnold and Luis Diaz both picked up knocks against Bournemouth, however, both are expected to be involved against Newcastle.

New signing Waturo Endo made his debut from the bench on Saturday and could be involved.

Prediction

Newcastle are very strong at home and look to have continued where they left off last season. They will be disappointed not to have performed better in their 1-0 reverse at the Etihad, however, that result may have had more to do with the strength of Manchester City than with Newcastle’s shortcomings.

However, Liverpool are another formidable opponent for the Geordies and will be looking to lay down a marker for the season as they strive to rediscover their consistency.

Home advantage makes Newcastle favourites but this one might end up as a score draw.
