Djokovic makes US singles return
  • Novak Djokovic wins in first singles match in the US for two years
  • Alcaraz progresses
  • Jabeur wins first match since Wimbledon as stars tune up for the US Open

Novak Djokovic returned to singles competition in the United States with a first round win in the Cincinnati Open. The tournament is being used as preparation for the US Open by a number of leading contenders.

Djokovic eases through first round

Djokovic, 36, made his first singles appearance in the United States for two years as he eased past Spain’s Alejandro Davidovich Fokina at the Cincinnati Open. Djokovic had been unable to compete in the US over Covid protocols. However, rules concerning unvaccinated foreign travellers were relaxed in May, allowing the 23-time Grand Slam winner to return.

The Serb competed in the Doubles on Tuesday, alongside compatriot Nikola Cacic. The pair lost out to Britain’s Jamie Murray and Kiwi Michael Venus.

Ruud and Sinner crash out

Third seed Casper Ruud was defeated by qualifier Max Purcell of Australia. Sixth seed Jannik Sinner lost 6-4 7-6 (7-1) to Dusan Lajovic.

Wins for Alcaraz and Medvedev

Carlos Alcaraz’s opening set against Jordan Thompson was briefly halted by rain before the world number one won 7-5 4-6 6-3 in the second round.

Russian third seed Daniil Medvedev moved into the last 16 with a 6-3 6-2 win over Italy’s Lorenzo Musetti.

Stan Wawrinka continued his recent good form with a win over Frances Tiafoe. Greek fourth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas and American ninth seed Taylor Fritz both also progressed.

Britons Cameron Norrie and Dan Evans have exited the tournament

Jabeur wins first match since Wimbledon final

In her first match since losing the Wimbledon final to Marketa Vondrousova, Ons Jabeur, who received a bye in the first round, defeated Ukrainian Anhelina Kalinina. Jabeur fought back from 5-1 down in the third set to reach the third round.
