The Nigerian Professional Football League, also known as the NPFL (ex-Nigerian Premier League) is one of the best first divisions in Africa. As a long-time member of CAF, the teams compete not only for a domestic title but also for a place in the CAF Champions League.
If you want to place a bet on the league, then you’ve come to the right place. We felt like the NPFL deserved some more coverage, so the team wanted to create a brand-new crash course for this season. Aside from Nigerian Professional Football League betting tips, you’ll learn about what happened last season, who are the best players, etc.
Ready to enter the amazing world of Nigerian football? Great, let’s begin!
Football Betting Tips for Nigerian Professional Football League 2022/23
The new NPFL campaign starts in December and ends in July the following year.
In 2021/23 season saw Akwa United take the NPFL title as they finished at the top of the table and subsequently qualified for the CAF Champions League.
This was Akwa United’s first league title to date. Last season was very close across the entire table as the competition to grab the top places and avoid the bottom places was extremely tight. We could very well see a repeat of this close competition for the ongoing season.
There will be four new additions to the top division this season: Gombe United, Shooting Stars, Remo Stars FC, and Niger Tornadoes. Our Nigerian Professional Football League predictions have them all fighting for survival, but a lot can happen from now until the end of the season. That’s the beauty of the NPFL right there!
These four new teams were all promoted from their respective groups in the National League. Gombe United were promoted from Group A1 and Niger Tornadoes were promoted from Group A2. Shooting Stars were promoted from Group B1 and Remo Stars FC was promoted from Group B2.
In order to make room for these new teams to join the NPFL, Adamawa United, Warri Wolves, FC Ifeanyi Ubah, and Jigawa Golden Stars were all relegated to the lower division Nigerian National League. It was Adamawa United that finished the previous season at the very bottom of the table in 20th, managing to obtain just 25 points from 5 wins, 10 draws, and 23 losses.
Which are Considered Best Bookmakers for Nigerian Professional Football League
There is no shortage of bookmakers to choose from when it comes to Nigerian football betting. Since we’re talking about one of the most popular, if not THE most popular league in Africa, then you can bet that you’ll see a lot of good NPFL markets and odds all over the place. But unfortunately, not every bookie is created the same.
To use your Nigerian Professional Football League betting tips properly, you need a bookmaker that can fulfil all your needs, and then some. That’s why we tested a number of different sites and graded them on their NPFL offers. Take a look at our top list below, try them out, and make your pick to start betting! Good luck!
Previous Season Recap
The 2020/21 season was a very close battle across the entirety of the NPFL table. Akwa United had a very successful end to their season as they triumphed over all other teams to take their first NPFL title. Akwa United finished on a fantastic 71 points from 19 wins, 14 draws, and only 5 losses. Rivers United and Enyimba finished on equal points with only the goal difference separating the two sides, which gave Rivers United the 2nd place finish.
The battle in the other top spots and in the middle of the table was also extremely tight. Both Kwara United and Nasarawa United finished on 65 points, just 1 point away from challenging for 2nd and 3rdplace. Dakkada were also just 1 point off a top 10 finish as they ended their 2020/21 season in 11th.
It was probably one of the best times to use Nigerian Professional Football League predictions. Anything could happen, and a lot of our tipsters and readers made off like bandits.
The fight to escape relegation was also very close indeed. Adamawa United’s fate was more or less sealed last season after an underwhelming performance, yet the battle to remain in the top division amongst the other teams was quite close. By the end of the season, Sunshine Stars and Wikki Tourists managed to create a four point gap to the relegation zone, and Abia Warriors a six point gap, and ensured their survival in the NPFL for another season.
Notable Transfers
Contrary to popular belief, Nigerian Professional Football League predictions should be based more on transfers, than on last-season results. Don’t get us wrong – form does carry over into next season, but it’s these key additions that can make or break any team in the NPFL. And boy, has it been an exciting period for Nigerian clubs on the market.
Potential title contenders Rivers United have made a number of signings during the transfer window and have largely looked to develop their options at the back. This comes from the signings of right-back John Lazarus, left-back Ebube Gideon Duru, and Barry Legbara. Rivers United’s attacking options have also been somewhat bolstered through the introduction of winger Auwalu Ali Malam and centre-forward Nwangwa Nyima.
In hoping to defend their title, Akwa United have not made many signings recently. Their options in the attacking third might see some developments through the introduction of attacking midfielder Godspower Aniefiok. Notably, however, the squad has seen the departures of centre-forward Charles Atshimmene who has now joined Portuguese side CD Feirense, as well as centre-back Olisa Ndah who signed for South African side Orlando Pirates. These departures could have an effect on Akwa’s title defence.
Which Teams are Favourites to Win Nigerian Professional Football League 2022/23
Enyimba
Enyimba are the most successful team in the NPFL by way of title wins as the team currently holds a record total of 8 championships with their most recent coming from the 2018/19 season. Given the recency of their title win, Enyimba are a team that can challenge for the top spots. After finishing in 3rd last campaign, and ever so close to clinching 2nd away from Rivers United, Enyimba could bridge the gap for the 2021/22 season.
Akwa United
Winning their first ever NPFL title last season has demonstrated that Akwa United are serious contenders. Their victory last season was very impressive as they managed to fend off the competition and maintain their spot at the top of the table. With the weight of a title defence, Akwa United could be looking to make even more of an impact for the 2021/22 season but their limited recruitment could hinder them.
Rivers United
Rivers United experienced a great season last year as the team took 2nd place behind champions Akwa United. Rivers United just about managed to secure 2nd despite some harsh competition that could have seen them drop down the order. With their recent signings, Rivers United could be looking to consolidate their position at the top of the table for the new season and potentially even challenge for the title after coming within touching distance last time.
Kano Pillars
Despite finishing in 6th during the 2020/21 season, Kano Pillars were still only two points away from 2nd place Rivers United. Kano Pillars has also established themselves as a known title contender after an astonishing run of championship victories which saw them retain the title for three consecutive years between 2012 and 2014. As the team was just two points away from challenging for the top spots in the NPFL table last season, Kano Pillars will be looking to make even more of an impact this season and potentially even make a play for the title.
Which Teams are in Danger of Relegation?
Sunshine Stars
Sunshine Stars just about managed to keep a spot in the top flight division as they narrowly avoided the relegation zone last season. Finishing just four points ahead of the relegated Warri Wolves, Sunshine Stars ended the 2020/21 season in 16th position. If their form from last season continues into the new campaign, Sunshine Stars could be facing a relegation battle which may see them in the National League by the end of the year.
Wikki Tourists
In a similar position to Sunshine Stars last season, Wikki Tourists finished in 15th with an only marginally better goal difference giving them this extra place ahead of the relegation zone. Still only four points away from being relegated last season, if they do not improve on their form for the 2021/22 campaign Wikki Tourists could be facing relegation.
Gombe United
Gombe United found success in the Nigerian National League in 2020/21 and are one of the newly promoted sides for the 2021/22 NPFL season. With the competition in the top division already difficult and daunting enough, it might be even more challenging for a new side to fit in and compete effectively. Gombe United may need to have an instant impact on the pitch if they are to remain in their top-flight status and avoid immediate relegation back to the National League.
Goalscorers to Keep an Eye on This Season
Silas Nwankwo
The former Nasarawa United centre-forward has always been rather impressive for his side, racking up 19 goals in 35 appearances last season. His 19-goal tally in the 2020/21 season put him at the top of the scoring charts. With his closest goalscoring rival last season Charles Atshimene now out of the NPFL after departing Akwa United for Portuguese side CD Feirense, it seemed like Silas Nwankwo would dominate the league. However, he’s been snapped up by Swedish side Mjällby recently.
Rabiu Ali
The experienced midfielder for Kano Pillars Rabiu Ali consistently delivers for his team, and last season he made it into joint 3rd in the top goalscorer’s table with 14 goals to his name. If Rabiu Ali can make even more headway on his performances for the renewed NPFL season he could be a potential contender for the very top spot in the goalscorers table.
Stephen Chibueze Jude
The attacking midfielder for Kwara United has so far been making a name for himself at the club. Jude has secured 10 goals and 4 assists in just 28 appearances for the club. His run of form last season placed him within the top 10 goalscorers in the league. This could put him in a decent enough position to start challenging for even higher spots in the top goalscorers table for the 2021/22 season.
