Villanova Wildcats Overview
The Villanova Wildcats made it to the Final Four on the back of their spectacular defense over the last couple of weeks. They allowed no more than 61 points in their four tournament games, beating Delaware, Ohio State, Michigan, and Houston to make it to Caesars Superdome in New Orleans. In the South Region final against Houston, Villanova held the Cougars to just 44 points to secure their matchup with the Jayhawks.
While things have gone well for Villanova in this tournament so far, they’ve got a huge question to answer thanks to the injury suffered by Justin Moore during their Elite Eight win. Moore won’t be available for the Wildcats in the Final Four, which shrinks a rotation that was only seven deep for most of this tournament already. How Villanova manages their minutes in this game will likely decide just how competitive they’re against Bill Self’s team.
On the floor, Villanova will need to figure out how to slow down the Jayhawks, specifically Ochai Agbaji and Remy Martin. While the Wildcats rely mostly on their starters in each game, Kansas has been able to get huge contributions from Martin off the bench. His fresh legs could be a problem off the bench for a Villanova team that may not make many substitutions at all in this contest.
Kansas Jayhawks Overview
The Kansas Jayhawks had a very favorable road to the Final Four, beating Texas Southern, Creighton, Providence, and Miami to get to New Orleans. They played one top-five seed in the Midwest Region, with that being Providence in the Sweet 16. After that, they were fortunate to face 10-seed Miami in the Elite Eight, thanks to a number of upsets that took place in the bottom half of the Midwest bracket.
Favorable schedule or not, Kansas has been very deserving of their place in the Final Four, as their offense has performed at a very high level throughout this tournament. They were held under 75 points in just one of their four games over the last two weeks, with that coming against Providence in the Sweet 16. But Kansas got their offense back on track in the second half against Miami, where they scored 45 points to earn their ticket to the Superdome.
In this game, Kansas needs to defend the three-point line with gusto, as that’s the greatest strength of the Villanova offense. Collin Gillespie’s a dangerous three-point shooter for the Wildcats, and his usage should increase with the Moore injury. The Jayhawks will need to stay attached to him to avoid letting him shoot the Wildcats into a game that Kansas will feel like they should win as a four-point favorite.
