In a monumental move signaling a shift in the state’s stance on gambling, Florida was gearing up to welcome sports betting to its sunny shores. The decision came after careful deliberation, evaluation, and consideration of the economic and social implications of legalizing online sports betting. This seemed to have positioned Florida as the next US state to embrace the industry this October…
However, on Oct. 6, the Supreme Court rained on Florida’s betting parade. In the latest chapter of a two-year tug-of-war between the Seminole Tribe and other vested interests, the highest court ordered a stay, prohibiting the Seminole Tribe of Flordia from launching betting across the state until the court makes an official decision.
Then, on Wednesday, Oct. 25, the court justices vacated Justice Roberts’ order and denied the requested stay without an explanation.
Additionally, two pari-mutuel companies, West Flager Associates and the Bonita-Fort Myers Corp, filed a lawsuit in 2021 that remains pending with the FL Supreme Court, arguing the plan violates a 2018 constitutional amendment and authorizes gambling off tribal lands. The FL Supreme Court has yet to decide if it will consider the case or refer it to a lower court, with some estimates as long as three years before a decision is made.
