Caroline Wozniacki Triumphs in US Open Return
  • Defeated two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova
  • It’s been over three years since Wozniacki professionally competed
  • Former top-ranked woman in the world

After a 3½-year break, Caroline Wozniacki marks a stellar comeback, reaching the third round of the US Open by defeating two-time Wimbledon champ Petra Kvitova.

Wozniacki’s Remarkable Win Against Petra Kvitova

Celebrating a dream-like return to the US Open, Caroline Wozniacki clinched a remarkable win against Petra Kvitova with scores 7-5, 7-6 (5) at the Arthur Ashe Stadium on Wednesday. Wozniacki, who once believed she’d never again grace the court, expressed her elation, saying, “This couldn’t be better.”

The Danish player, aged 33, boasts an impressive track record in tennis. In her earlier stint, she won the 2018 Australian Open and even reached the coveted No. 1 spot in the global rankings. Wozniacki took a hiatus from tennis in 2020, shifting her focus to start a family with former NBA player David Lee and later explored a career in TV analysis.

Despite her current world rank of 623, her recent return to the sport seems timely and promising. She has graced Flushing Meadows this month, her first since 2019. Fans still reminisce her stellar performance when she emerged as the US Open runner-up in both 2009 and 2014. Reflecting on her love for the game and the city, Wozniacki said, “I love New York. I love this court… I felt so comfortable on these courts and knew that I could play some great tennis.”

Her next challenge is the upcoming match against the formidable Jennifer Brady, the 2020 US Open semifinalist and 2021 Australian Open finalist. Brady herself made a recent comeback following a two-year injury break.

Wozniacki’s journey against Kvitova was marked by intense moments, especially when she missed two opportunities to close the match at 5-4 in the second set. Nevertheless, her perseverance shone through as she eventually sealed the win. Sharing insights on the intense match, Wozniacki said, “Obviously we knew each other’s game very well… I’m just so happy that I was the one who came out on top today.”

Concluding her performance, statistics reveal Wozniacki’s impressive 122 major match wins, ranking her fourth among active female players, solidifying her legacy in the sport.

Betting Implications

Wozniacki has steep odds to win the tournament, and for good reason. Not playing competitive tennis for over three years is going to make it difficult to get to the end, especially as she faces some of the top competitors. As a former No. 1 player, she has the capabilities to advance further and could take down a couple of more favorites in the process.
