Operators interested in obtaining a license for sports betting in North Carolina must submit their proposed controls before the established deadline. The North Carolina State Lottery stated that this ensures the applicant is ready to launch on the market’s opening day.
Crucial deadline for operators
North Carolina online sports betting is expected to go live on March 11.
The deadline was set during a Commission meeting. In the same meeting, the Commission approved processes and documents guiding applicants on submitting internal controls for approval.
Each licensed operator must receive approval of internal controls before offering bets in North Carolina.
North Carolina has not yet set a launch date for legal sports betting, although it is expected to be in March 2024. Commission chair Ripley Rand previously stated that this will largely depend on the duration of the license application process.
The Commission will need to review all applications and supporting information. It must also complete background checks and analyze details of internal controls before it can set a launch date.
Currently, the Commission is reviewing the applications of nine prospective operators. The application process started in early December after the state’s governor, Roy Cooper, signed House Bill 347 into law in June.
Uncertainty remains over sports betting rules in North Carolina. The Commission has not yet finalized these rules, although some measures were set out in the bill signed last year.
These include allowing bets on college sports, esports, and other sports events authorized by the Commission. The tax will be set at 18% of each license holder’s gross gaming revenue.
It is also stipulated that operators must have a written designation agreement with a sports team, league, or venue to launch sports betting.
Among those seeking a license is BetMGM, which has reached a market access agreement with the Charlotte Motor Speedway. BetMGM expressed hope that the North Carolina market would open before the end of the first quarter.
DraftKings is also gearing up to launch in the state, partnering with Nascar. This deal makes DraftKings the exclusive daily fantasy sports partner of Nascar in the US and Canada.
