Dallas Cowboys Lose Cornerback Trevon Diggs to Season-Ending ACL Injury
  • Diggs suffered the injury during practice on Thursday
  • The Cowboys’ defense has allowed the fewest points this season
  • He has 18 interceptions in 47 career games

Dallas Cowboys’ star cornerback Trevon Diggs suffers a season-ending torn ACL during practice, dealing a significant blow to the team’s top-ranked defense.

In a devastating turn of events for the Dallas Cowboys, star cornerback Trevon Diggs will miss the remainder of the season due to a torn ACL in his left knee. Diggs sustained the injury during Thursday’s practice session and was seen on crutches at the team facility before undergoing an MRI that confirmed the tear.

The loss of Diggs is a massive setback for the Cowboys’ defense, which currently leads the NFL in both yards allowed and points per game. Diggs has been instrumental in the team’s success, tying for the most interceptions in the NFL with 18 since his debut in 2020. So far this season Diggs has also forced a fumble, intercepted a pass, and recorded three pass breakups while being credited with six tackles in just two games.

Diggs recently secured his future with the Cowboys by signing a five-year, $97 million contract extension during training camp, which included a $21.25 million signing bonus and $42.3 million guaranteed. Despite missing four games in 2020 due to a foot injury, Diggs had been exceptionally durable, missing just one game in each of the past two seasons.

With Diggs sidelined for the season, the Cowboys are expected to shuffle their defensive backfield. DaRon Bland, who led the Cowboys with five interceptions last season, could be moved to outside cornerback opposite Stephon Gilmore, acquired in an offseason trade with the Indianapolis Colts. Jourdan Lewis, who recently returned from a foot injury, can resume his role in the slot. Additionally, the Cowboys have Noah Igbinoghene, a 2020 first-round pick acquired in a recent trade with the Miami Dolphins, and rookie Eric Scott at cornerback. Nahshon Wright, another cornerback, is on injured reserve with an ankle injury but is eligible to return in Week 5.

The loss of Diggs will test the depth and adaptability of the Cowboys’ defensive unit as they aim to maintain their top-ranked status.

Betting Implications

This is a huge blow to the Cowboys. They currently have one of the best defenses in the league, as they’ve allowed the fewest yards and points to start the season. Diggs has been the cornerstone of this defense, no pun intended, as he is one of the premier players at his position. He began the season playing exceptionally well, allowing just three catches for 31 yards. Additionally, quarterbacks have a mere 9.9 passer rating when throwing to the receiver he’s covering.

According to BetMGM, the Cowboys have the third-best odds in the NFL to the Super Bowl (+800). While they still have stars on their defense, including Micah Parsons, and a talented offense led by Dak Prescott, this is a tough loss but does not necessarily take them out of contention.
