Vermont Catamounts vs. Arkansas Razorbacks / 2022 NCAA Tournament Round Of 64 Predictions & Preview

Vermont vs. Arkansas 2022 NCAA Tournament Round Of 64 Predictions & Preview

The first round of the NCAA Tournament’s West region includes a 4 vs. 13 matchup between the Arkansas Razorbacks and the Vermont Catamounts.

This is one of the more interesting matchups of round one, as Vermont has become a trendy pick to pull off an upset in the opening round of March Madness. To do that, the Catamounts will need to overcome a disadvantage in the athleticism department with its efficiency from three-point range. See the betting picks for this matchup, along with all the other first-round games of March Madness.

Game Prediction

While this game is set to be competitive from start to finish, this should be Arkansas’ game to lose. They’re simply too fast for a Vermont team that’s spent the last two months fattening up on subpar programs in the America East. See the [best betting sites](/us/betting-sites) for all your March Madness needs.

Now, the Razorbacks will prove too much for Vermont to handle, and the Razorbacks will win this game and cover the five-point spread in a line that’s just a little too short for a matchup between the America East and SEC. Still looking for a place to make your sports bets? Check out Pointsbet

Vermont Catamounts Overview

Vermont made it to the NCAA Tournament by demolishing the America East this season, losing just one game in conference play en route to a dominant performance in the conference tournament. The Catamounts punctuated their run through the America East with a 39-point win over UMBC in the championship game of the conference tournament, winning 82-43 in a wire-to-wire victory. Here, they’ll face a much tougher opponent in the Arkansas Razorbacks than the America East foes they’re used to.

The step-up in level of competition is set to be the biggest question for the Catamounts ahead of this game. They’ve won 20 of their last 21 games against America East opponents, but beating the brakes off of teams like UMBC and Binghamton isn’t adequate preparation for going toe-to-toe with a team like Arkansas. Vermont will need to avoid foul trouble, especially early in the game, as they face a more physical opponent.

To help offset that difference in physicality, Vermont will need to light it up from three-point range, something they’re very good at doing. Ben Shungu and Ryan Davis are especially dangerous at shooting from the outside, as they can score at the basket as well. The dual-threat those two players provide could evoke memories of Taylor Coppenrath and TJ Sorrentine if their outside shots fall.

Arkansas Razorbacks Overview

Arkansas is hoping their superior athleticism will carry them through against the Catamounts in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. They’re led by JD Notae, who helped stamp out a similar upset bid from a trendy pick in Colgate during last year’s tournament. Arkansas also knocked Oral Roberts out of last year’s tournament, ending multiple Cinderella bids in just two weeks of action.

Against Vermont, the Razorbacks will have to attack the paint early and often to make up for their poor outside shooting. If there’s a path to victory for Vermont in this game, it’ll be Arkansas settling for outside shots and failing to convert on them. Instead, the Razorbacks would be smart to take the ball to the basket against Vermont bigs that aren’t used to guarding players as strong and fast as those from the SEC.

Arkansas must also avoid looking ahead to a potential second-round game against the UConn Huskies. The fifth-seeded Huskies would make for an interesting matchup with the Razorbacks, as star guard RJ Cole and Notae would go head to head. But those hypothetical matchups are meaningless if the Razorbacks can’t get the job done against a Vermont team that’ll pose a stern challenge.
