St. Peter’s Peacocks Overview

St. Peter’s has faced a brutal path to the Elite Eight, beating two-seed Kentucky, seven-seed Murray State, and three-seed Purdue. The Peacocks were known as a defensive team coming into the tournament, and haven’t disappointed on that end of the floor. In their last two games, the Peacocks have allowed under 65 points to Murray State and Purdue, and will look for another defensive gem against a blue-blood program with a spot in the Final Four on the line.

In addition to their defense, the Peacocks have greatly exceeded expectations on the offensive end of the floor. They haven’t shied away from going to the basket and taking contact from the bigger and more physical teams that they’ve faced so far. That fearlessness on offense will be incredibly important to maintain against a North Carolina team with the size and athleticism to disrupt shots and rack up blocks against timid offenses.

The most important part of this game for the Peacocks will be simply avoiding being intimidated by the moment. That hasn’t been a problem for the Peacocks yet, as they’ve been incredibly poised even when facing some of the top players in all of college basketball like Oscar Tshiebwe and Jaden Ivey. But with a spot in the Final Four at one of the largest venues in American sports on the line, that poise will be more important than ever.

North Carolina Tar Heels Overview

The North Carolina Tar Heels have made a surprising run to the Elite Eight themselves, even if it hasn’t been as surprising as that of St. Peter’s. The eighth-seeded Tar Heels have beaten Marquette, Baylor, and UCLA to reach the Elite Eight, as the ACC squad looks to reach another Final Four. But better teams have already fallen to St. Peter’s in this tournament and the Tar Heels will need to bring their best effort to avoid being another victim of a Peacocks upset.

As has been the case throughout this tournament, the size of North Carolina is going to be their biggest advantage against St. Peter’s. While the Peacocks have gone 3-0 during March Madness so far, they gave up 30 points to Oscar Tshiebwe and have shown they can be vulnerable against athletic bigs. North Carolina will need to prioritize their interior advantage to maximize their chances on Sunday.

Also important for the Tar Heels will be not looking ahead to a potential Final Four matchup with Duke. The Tar Heels and Blue Devils have one of the most storied rivalries in all of sports, and are a win each from meeting in New Orleans. As enticing as that matchup is, Hubert Davis’ team will need to focus on the task at hand rather than thinking about a showdown with Duke next weekend.
