Marquette Golden Eagles vs. North Carolina Tar Heels / NCAA Tournament 2022 Round Of 64 - Predictions & Preview

Playing about as well as you can heading into the Big Dance, perhaps no eight-seed enters the NCAA Tournament with the potential of North Carolina. They ended Coach K’s career at Cameron Indoor Stadium with a 13-point regular-season finale defeat. Beating your rival and the all-time greatest coach in college basketball history is a solid way to begin the postseason.

As for Marquette, they too have had some signature wins - a sweep of Villanova and Seton Hall - but less consistent play – they haven’t won back-to-back games since January. But here the Pirates are, where Shaka Smart, in his first season with the Golden Eagles, said they’d be.

While Marquette has a number of wins against highly seeded tournament teams, they’re too inconsistent to rely on in the NCAA Tournament. They also don’t have anyone big or physical enough to deal with Bacot in the paint. North Carolina will control the boards, and with far fewer second chances coming the Eagles way, their offense will struggle.

The Tar Heels have struggled at times against top talent, like a 17-point loss to Tennessee, and against below-average talent, like losing to 11-21 Pittsburgh in Chapel Hill.

Since that embarrassment, however, they’ve been great, recording solid wins against Virginia Tech and Duke. North Carolina has covered four of their last five games, and they should cover on Thursday against Marquette. See all the different Betting sites for this matchup between the Heels and Eagles.

Down the stretch, the majority of North Carolina’s games have hit the over. The over won in nine of their last 13 games, and on the season when the over has been 152 points or higher, the over is 6-3.

Along with North Carolina covering the spread, look for the Heels and Eagles to go Over 152.

Marquette Golden Eagles Overview

It’s safe to say even if Marquette gets bounced in their first-round matchup against the Tar Heels, they’ve exceeded expectations for the season. In the preseason, the writers voted them to finish ninth in the Big East. The Golden Eagles finished tied for fifth, just a game behind Creighton for fourth in the conference. Along with those sweeps of Seton Hall and Villanova (a two-seed), was an excellent win over Illinois (a four-seed), and a win over Big East champion Providence (a four-seed). So against very good competition, this team has played some great basketball.

The problem is they also have losses to below .500 teams DePaul and Butler, and they were embarrassed by St. Bonaventure. So with Marquette, the good is really good, and the bad can be quite bad.

North Carolina Tar Heels Overview

First-year head coach Hubert Davis has North Carolina back over 20 wins for the first time in three years, and they’re in the NCAA Tournament where they always seem to be. Since 1974, North Carolina has missed just four NCAA Tournaments.

Powered by Armando Bacot, one of the top big men in the nation, the Heels are in the top-20 in the country in both scoring and rebounding. They aren’t quite back to the Blue Blood status that made them a regular Final Four participant, but things are trending in the right direction for North Carolina. Bacot is an All-ACC First Team selection after averaging 16.5 PPG and 12.5 RPG, and he’s been the key for Carolina all season long.
