Seattle Sounders vs. Minnesota United / MLS 2022 Predictions & Preview

Seattle Sounders vs. Minnesota United / MLS 2022 Predictions & Preview

Fresh off a historic CONCACAF Champions League title, the Seattle Sounders fully turn their attention back to the MLS campaign. This weekend they are back at home with a chance to climb up the standings against seventh-place Minnesota United. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. ET on Sunday at Lumen Field in Seattle, airing on ESPN.

These teams met in Minnesota on April 2, making this the first rematch for either team in league play this season. Seattle won that contest 2-1 with a goal from Joao Paulo, and an own goal before Emanuel Reynoso got one back for the Loons with an 82nd-minute penalty kick. Seattle leads the all-time series 9-1-1 in MLS play, with a 1-0 home win last year.

Minnesota United Overview

The Loons have not been a good road team the last two seasons, with just four wins from 22 games away from home. That stretch includes eight draws and ten losses. Trips to the Pacific Northwest have been unproductive as Minnesota is 3-12 with two draws in visits to Seattle, Portland, and Vancouver.

After being shocked at home by FC Cincinnati last weekend 1-0, Minnesota United rebounded to win their U.S. Open Cup game, also at home. The game was suspended by inclement weather Wednesday night and finished Thursday afternoon with a 2-1 Loons win over Colorado Rapids. Reynoso won it in the 87th minute, and Abu Danladi scored the opener.

The manager ran a 4-2-4 against Cincinnati and a 3-4-3 against Colorado Rapids. Reynoso and Danladi play in attacking positions, and Adrien Hunou joined them in the last two games. Robin Lod and Luis Amarilla both missed last week’s game, Lod through illness, and Amarilla at home with his wife giving birth.

If available this weekend, both would be in the mix to start alongside Francisco Fragapane, with captain Wil Trapp and Kervin Arriaga as defensive mids. The back-four consists of Kemar Lawrence, Oniel Fisher, Michael Boxall, and Bikaya Dibassy, with Dayne St. Clair in goal.

Lod has three MLS goals this season, while Reynoso and Amarilla have two each. Reynoso also has two assists, as does Bongokuhie Hlongwane.

St. Clair has started eight games in goal, taking over for Tyler Miller after the second game of the season. He has 34 saves, three clean sheets, and has only allowed seven goals. Minnesota faces the third-most shots per game in MLS at 14.5 per game.

Seattle Sounders Overview

Seattle has lost three straight MLS games, all to teams that missed the playoffs last year. They also fell in the Fourth Round of the U.S. Open Cup on Wednesday night, falling to San Jose Earthquakes 10-9 in penalties after a 2-2 draw.

As good as Seattle was in the Champions League, they have struggled in MLS action, especially at home. Usually one of the best home-field advantages in the league, the Sounders do not have a win in their last six league games at Lumen Field. In three of the last four home games, they have been shutout, though this will be just their fourth home league game of 2022.

A big blow to Seattle came in the CCL Final as they lost star midfielder Joao Paulo to an ACL tear. A 2021 MLS MVP finalist and selection to the MLS Best XL, Paulo started six MLS games before his injury with one goal scored.

Seattle typically plays a 4-2-3-1 though they lined up in a 3-4-3 for last week’s 2-0 loss at FC Dallas. That game featured a patchwork lineup after the grueling run of Champions League games in midweek.

Manager Brian Schmetzer can get back to normal with his available players this week. Look for Raul Ruidiaz up top with Nicolas Lodeiro behind him and Cristian Roldan/Jordan Morris on the wings. That’s how Sounders lined up in the CCL Final win over Pumas.

Albert Rusnak and Fredy Montero in midfield with Alex Roldan, Xavier Arreaga, Jackson Ragen, and Nouhou Tolo as the back four. Stefan Frei is in goal over Stefan Cleveland, who played last week in Dallas and again in the U.S. Open Cup loss. Obed Vargas and Leo Chu are options in midfield, and Will Bruin started at forward in the midweek loss to San Jose.

Seattle is one of five MLS teams with less than ten goals this season, and Morris is the only player with more than one goal in league play. Lodeiro has three assists in two starts while also scoring from the spot. Getting Ruidiaz, Lodeiro, and Morris back healthy and playing together is key to a Sounders run back up the table.

Match Prediction

Seattle is a significant favorite in the soccer betting odds at -145. Minnesota United is +380 to take all three points, while a draw is +290. The goals line is 2.5 with over at -140 and under at +105. Both teams to score is -150.

Ruidiaz is the goal-scoring favorite at +135, with Montero at +150 and Morris at +180. Lod is +280 for Minnesota, with Amarilla also at +280.

Seattle can focus on MLS action now that they won the CCL and were knocked out of the US Open. Minnesota played Thursday and have a long travel to a place where they’ve historically been bad.

Prediction: Seattle 2, Minnesota 0
