D.C. United Overview

D.C. United is the only team in the MLS not to draw a game this season. They’ve got four wins and five losses from nine games and are one game behind after having a contest with NYCFC bumped due to the Champions League. After winning two straight to start the season, United lost four in a row in March and early April, allowing eight goals and scoring just three in that span, and manager Hernan Losada was fired.

They head to Miami after a 3-0 home loss to New York Red Bulls in the U.S. Open Cup Fourth Round on Tuesday night. Manager Chad Ashton, who took over April 20, started just two regulars on Tuesday. With four games in 11 days, United needs to find a way to keep players rotated and fresh to climb up the standings.

After taking charge, Ashton switched United to a 3-4-3 formation. Either Michael Estrade or Ola Kamara starts at center forward, flanked by Edison Flores and Taxiarchis Fountas. Russell Canouse and Sofiane Djeffal take the center mid spots with Brad Smith and Julian Gressel on the wings.

Center defender Steve Birnbaum’s the captain and has played all 810 MLS minutes this season, as has left back Brendan Hines-Ike. Donovan Pines started at right-back last weekend and Andy Najar has six starts in defense this season.

Goalkeeping has been an issue as Bill Hamid lost his starting spot on April 16 but regained it last week. He’s allowed eight goals in seven starts with three clean sheets while Jon Kempin allowed five goals in his two starts.

United’s led in scoring by Kamara and Fountas, each with four goals. Estrada has scored three times and Gressel has two assists. Fountas scored both goals last week in the win over Houston Dynamo and has taken off under Ashton’s leadership.

Inter Miami Overview

Just when it looked like Inter Miami finally had things figured out, they came crashing back down the MLS standings. The Herons started the season with a draw and four losses before a change in formation and personnel led to wins over New England, Seattle, and Atlanta United. But they haven’t scored in their last two MLS games, including an embarrassing loss to expansion side Charlotte last weekend.

Miami did have a good U.S. Open Cup match on Tuesday night as they routed South Georgia Tormenta 3-1. Ariel Lassiter started and scored twice while Robbie Robinson also scored off the bench before picking up a red card. The big development on Tuesday was getting a start and 45 minutes out of Designated Player Gonzalo Higuaín, who returned from multiple injuries.

Coach Phil Neville’s deployed five different formations this season and went with a 4-3-3 on Tuesday after using a 4-2-3-1 in Saturday’s loss to Charlotte. Youngster Leo Campana’s been starting over Higuain up top and leads Miami with five goals on the season. Jean Mota’s typically behind Campana/Higuain with captain Gregore also in a central midfield role.

Miami uses Robinson on one wing when he’s healthy and Lassiter on the other, though Aston Villa loanee Indiana Vassilev started last Saturday in his return to Miami. Kieran Gibbs is healthy now and back at left back while DeAndre Yedlin takes the right back and Chris McVey starts in center defense with either Damion Lowe, Aimé Mabika, or last week, Ryan Sailor.

Goalkeeping has been a struggle for Miami as well. Nick Marsman allowed eight goals in five games and Clément Diop allowed seven in three starts. Marsman has a back injury and Drake Callender started Saturday and Tuesday. Callender has allowed four goals in two MLS starts, both losses.
