Nashville’s got the makings of a better team, although they haven’t produced results akin to their performances. Houston, on the other hand, doesn’t play a great style but manga to grab results seemingly regardless of circumstance, despite their recent losing streak.

Neither one of these teams is a serious contender, but based on the fact they’ve done better on the stat sheet and have actually won a game in recent weeks, Nashville gets the nod here. They could be a lot better if they had a catalyst on the frontline, but they can address that at another date.

Houston Dynamo FC Overview

The Houston Dynamo’s eighth in the West with a 3-3-4 record, though they’ve lost their last three domestic matches and are winless in their last five across all competitions. This is a very troubling sign for a team that finished dead last in its conference last season but had seemed to turn a new leaf at the start of the campaign. Unless they can rekindle this early form, precedent suggests that they’re just going to keep falling down the table.

Carlos Ferreira and Darwin Quintero are tied for the team lead with four goals in 10 matches, while Fabrice Picault’s two goals make him the only other member of the roster to have found the back of the net on more than one occasion. Despite no player emerging as one of the best goal-scorers in the league, Houston actually ranks close to the top in team goals scored, though they’ve got just over half of first-place Los Angeles FC’s total.

The Dynamo tend to set up in either a 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3, though they’ve favored the former in recent matches. They aren’t proficient at creating chances, nor are they that great at retaining the ball, but they do play with a decent balance. The biggest problem for the Dynamo is they tend to always make it harder on themselves since they can’t truly dominate one aspect of the game, so until they do, they’ll find it hard to produce consistently positive results.

Nashville SC Overview

Nashville’s sixth in the West with a 4-3-3 record and they won their most recent match, a 2-0 result over Real Salt Lake. Despite this positive, they’ve been all over in recent weeks and have not found the same result, whether it be win, loss, or draw, in consecutive games since their fifth and sixth-most-recent matches.

C.J. Sapong leads the club with just three goals on the season as the team has struggled to find a talisman. Nashville’s one of many teams with 11 total goals scored, one behind Houston but also far down the charts; their defensive record has been slightly better, albeit not amazing, and they’re still some ways away from seriously competing in the postseason, assuming they make it.

Nashville plays a very offensive three-at-the-back system, whether that be 3-5-2 or 3-4-2-1, which changes depending on the opponent. They’re great at both creating goal-scoring opportunities and bossing possession, but their offensive output— and record— aren’t reflective of this. Nashville just needs to become more clinical in front of goal, because if they do, their mid-table team will suddenly transform into a feared opponent; until then, however, they’ll just be average or slightly above.
