Charlotte FC @ CF Montreal / MLS 2022 Predictions & Preview

The 2022 MLS season is into its 17th week, and as we approach the mid-season period, the games are heating up, and we’re seeing some of the best showdowns. Los Angeles continues to maintain the top spot, and even though they’ve played only 15 games, the team still has the most points in the league this season.

NY City is leading the way in the Eastern Conference, and the team has only played 14 games. Therefore, it will take some work to knock New York City FC off the top of the ladder. Because of that, teams in this conference keep playing catchup to NYCFC, and the tie between them remains fierce.

In that case, we are looking at the battle between two Eastern Conference teams looking to solidify their position in the top seven positions of the division. The reason is so they can make it to the playoff rounds for a chance to win the competition and qualify for the CONCACAF Champions League.

Keep reading as we explore Charlotte FC as they visit CF Montreal this weekend for a week 17 showdown up North.

CF Montreal Overview

It has been a rollercoaster season for Montreal. The season did not start well at all. The team did not win a single game in their first three league games.

The only win they had in their first seven games came in the CCL match against Santos Laguna. However, their fourth league match brought the early season good luck.

After getting knocked out by Cruz Azul in the CCL, the team drew their next league game before going on a three-game win streak. Then they drew another and went on another three-game win streak. CF Montreal was unbeaten for the next eight games after getting knocked out until they traveled to Nashville.

That loss at Nashville launched them into back-to-back losses, and they’ve only won once in the last three matches in the league. Because of their recent slip-up, the team is sitting in 5th place on the Eastern Conference table. In 15 games, they’ve gathered 23 points, winning seven, drawing two, and losing six.

The team has scored 28 goals, the highest in the Eastern Conference. Meanwhile, their main problem is from the back.

The team struggles to keep the ball away from their net as they’ve conceded 27, which is the worst for any team in the top seven of the Eastern Conference. Therefore, coach Wilfried Nancy must find a way to make his defensive tactics better.

Charlotte FC Overview

Charlotte FC’s season also started as bad as Montreal’s as they lost their first three matches. But they soon bounced back to win back-to-back games, thanks to the absence of the CCL distractions. However, they couldn’t keep up as they continued on a rollercoaster form, where they won four in the last ten and drew two.

As a result, their season tally after 16 games is not good as they only have 20 points from the possible 48. Overall, the team has won six games and drawn two. Therefore, they’ve lost 50% of their matches this season, which is not a good look for a team that wants to compete for a spot in the top seven positions.

The team is doing poorly in the goals department as they’ve only scored 16, with their highest goalscorers scoring four apiece. Therefore, it is easy to spot the problem because the team needs to create more chances and score more goals. It is the only way to improve their form and get more points.

Defensively, Miguel Angel Ramirez has done well because he has been able to get the goals conceded to a minimum. They’ve only conceded 19 goals so far, which is a top-five defensive record in the Eastern Conference.

So, the main issue is getting the forwards to score more goals. Therefore, we expect Karo Swiderski and Andre Shinyashiki to be working on converting more chances.

Charlotte FC @ CF Montreal Predictions

Both teams would want to get all three points to help their quest of finishing in one of the top seven spots of the Eastern Conference.

However, with Montreal at home, they would want to win in front of their fans and try to reduce the goals they concede. Therefore, we expect a more pragmatic approach from Nancy.

Ramirez’s side is known for its defensive capabilities, and it would be tough to break down the defense. We expect a tight match.

Our pick for the game is 2-0 in favor of the home team, CF Montreal.
