Newmarket Classic success again for O’Brien?
Aidan O’Brien will be looking to claim another Newmarket classic with the 2000 Guineas on Saturday.
Gustav Klimt currently heads the market and already has form at Newmarket having won the Superlative Stakes in July. Unfortunately he then missed the remainder of the season. He has ran this season already though and won easily in heavy going at Leopardstown. There was a very interesting tweet during the week stating that none of O’Briens 8 previous 2000 Guineas winners had had a prep run. Could Gustav Klimt be the horse to break that run? I think that the current odds of 5/2 being shown by the bookmakers are likely to be snapped up and for me are already skinny enough.
Of course O’Brien is not reliant solely on one horse. Of the 16 declared he has 4 runners. I like the look of Saxon Warrior. He battled back bravely after being headed to win the Racing Post Trophy by a neck from the very highly regarded Roaring Lion. He has not been seen on a racecourse since so it will be down to how he has trained at Ballydoyle.
Roaring Lion was sent off a warm order favourite for the Craven Stakes at Newmarket and was somewhat of a flop. He had every chance 2f out and was then outpaced in the last 1f. It could be worth overlooking that as he has form at Newmarket having won here on 2 previous occasions over a mile. But has he the class to prevail in a classic? This is John Gosden’s only runner now that Without Parole has been withdrawn after a setback on Tuesday.
Newmarket 2000 Guineas Contenders
A lively Newmarket 2000 Guineas contender will be the Craven Stakes winner Masar. He made all to win that race and quickened away. With the ground drying he will certainly be a contender with him on the form of his life. My concern is was his last race a flash in the pan or a true indication of him? Those that got the 8/1 about are certainly on the value as he is currently trading at 5/1.
Mark Johnson brings his rangy colt Elarqam and is underplaying his chances. Yet to run over a mile he was staying on strongly last time out over 7f when winning at Newmarket. Any horse out of Frankel should have speed in abundance and I think with Jim Crowley on board he has an excellent chance. Again the value on this horse may have gone as he is currently only available around the 11/2 mark although some bookmakers have him as low as 4/1.
Newmarket Tip of the Day
My Newmarket 2000 Guineas Tip is for ELARQAM to upset the Aiden O’Brien juggernaut and win.
Currently available at 11/2 at some bookmakers. Each way terms vary so ask your bookmaker.
