Long Walk Success Again for Harry?
Unowwhatimeanharry faces up to 8 rivals in his quest to retain his Long Walk Hurdle crown at Ascot on Saturday 23rd December at 2.25pm.
He comes here on the back on a shock defeat to 40/1 outsider Beer Goggles in the Long Distance Hurdle at Newbury. That race was supposedly a match between him and Thistlecrack.
I feel that they gave the winner a little too much leeway up front. If the race was run again tomorrow then the result would be very different.
That was only his 2nd defeat in his last 12 races, the other coming at the Cheltenham Festival in the Stayers Hurdle where he came 3rd. This shows that the horse has consistent form and with the going expected to be Good to Soft this will work very much in his favour.
Last year he won this race by 4.5l and I can see him doing much the same again as I feel the field this year is a weaker one.
Potential Long Walk Rivals for Harry?
The main rival for the likely favourite Unowwhatimeanharry could well be Lil Rockerfeller.
He won well last time out here at Ascot turning over a very good horse in Defi Du Seuil amongst others.
Whilst he did get his head in front of Harry at Cheltenham he did not win that race. That is the only occasion he has beaten him on the 3 times they have clashed. I believe that Harry just has too much stamina and travelling speed for Lil Rockerfeller to trouble him especially around Ascot.
Another contender could be the Nicky Henderson trained L’Ami Serge. This horse went down by 1.5l last time out in the Coral Cup at Ascot to Lil Rockerfeller but truthfully never looked likely to win the race. His form looks very patchy. I would be very surprised if he were to come here and win this as it would take a huge upturn in form.
Interestingly Nico de Boinville chooses to ride Thomas Campbell for the Henderson stable. This in itself could be looked at as a tip. The gelding has won both its race so far this season. Both took place at Cheltenham. Neither were at this level and again I think it is big step up in class here.
Of the others an interesting EW proposition may be Agrapart. Since winning on New Years Day at Cheltenham the form has been nothing to write home about.
What is worth noting was that the gelding beat L’Ami Serge and Lil Rockerfeller that day. Although that race was only over 2m 4f and this is over 3m.
He is currently available at 28/1 as opposed to the 9/2 about the other 2 horses. Place terms are 1/5 odds for first 3 places.
Tip of The Day
My tip for the Long Walk Hurdle is for Unowhatimeanharry to retain his crown.
