Manchester City to equal record victories?
Manchester City aim to equal the record of consecutive league victories in Europe’s top 5 leagues with victory against Crystal Palace.
Should they win it will be their 19th consecutive league victory. Incredibly Pep Guardiola coached the current holders of the record Bayern Munich who won 19 in season 2013-14.
It could be argued that this is a more impressive run as the strength in depth in the Premier League is deemed to be stronger.
They are currently averaging 3 goals per game and have the best defence in the league as well!
Newcastle were strongly condemned for their defensive tactics and were fortunate to escape with a 1-0 defeat and I do not expect Palace to follow suit.
Eagles to halt Manchester City flight to success?
If Crystal Palace are to defeat Manchester City then they will have to overturn recent history.
Manchester City have won 14 of their last 15 meetings in all competitions against Crystal Palace. In their last 2 league meeting Crystal Palace have suffered 5-0 thrashings at the hands of Manchester City.
In fact in the last 6 meeting between these 2 teams Palace have conceded 24 goals. Worryingly they have not kept a clean sheet in their last 10 home league games. All of this points to another league success for Manchester City.
However Crystal Palace may be one of the few teams who have the width and pace to trouble Manchester City with Wilfried Zaha and Andros Townsend.
Despite their well documented slow start to the season, 18 points after 20 games has only been bettered once in the last 5 seasons by Palace.
Their 3-2 defeat at home to Arsenal last time out was their first defeat in 9 games. Prior to this they had won 3 and drawn 5 in the league.
Manchester City v Crystal Palace Team News
Both teams have injury concerns coming into this match.
Crystal Palace will give a fitness test to French midfielder Yohan Cabaye and should he miss out he will be a big loss. Also there will be the issue of fatigue with 2 games in just over 60 hours for them.
Therefore Roy Hodgson may be forced into making changes to freshen up the team knowing the depth of Manchester City’s squad.
Manchester City have concerns in defence. Fabian Delph and John Stones both face fitness tests. Vincent Kompany looks likely to have another spell on the sidelines after limping off after 11 minutes against Newcastle.
There are are also rumours that David Silva may be rested for the match.
This still leaves Manchester City with a fantastic array of talent.
Raheem Sterling is the 3rd top scorer in the Premier league with 13 goals. Sergio Aguero despite being in and out of the team is only 1 behind on 12. Add in Gabriel Jesus, Leroy Sane and Ilkay Gundogan and you can see why goals are no issue.
Added to that they have probably the player of the season in Kevin De Bruyne who has 9 assists and 6 goals so far.
