US Open Tennis Men’s Tennis – Flushing Meadows

US Open Injuries throws tournament wide open?

The US Open of 2017 is potentially one of the most open Slam tournaments in recent times.  With no Novak Djokovic, Stan Wawrinka, Kei Nishikori or Milos Raonic could this be the year that one of the young guns come through and finally wins a major trophy?

Of course standing in the way is still 3 of the big 4 in the shape of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray.

Old Guard to hold firm at US Open?

Murray has not played since his quarter final defeat to Sam Querrey at Wimbledon.  The question this throws up is not how physically fit he is but will his hip hold up?  It is well documented that Roger Federer took a period of time off before winning at both the Australian Open and Wimbledon but I think Murray is the type of player who needs to play regularly to maintain his form.

Roger Federer is having a renaissance at the slams this year.  He continued this form into the hard court season when he made the final of the Canadian Open.  However he suffered a shock defeat to the German Alexander Zverev 6-3 6-4.  Incredibly he has a 35-3 record in 2017 on the ATP tour this season and all this at the age of 35!

Rafael Nadal has also found his form again this year after battling back from numerous injuries.  He won his first slam title since 2014 picking up the French Open without dropping a set.  He had also started the hard court season well reaching the Mexican Open before being defeated 7-6 6-3 in the final by Sam Querrey.  Nadal also reached the final in Indian Wells before going down to Roger Federer 6-3 6-4.  Since Wimbledon his form appears to have tapered off.  He has suffered early exits at both the Canadian Open and Cincinnati Masters.

US Open New Guard?

With a lot of the Top 10 missing there has never been a better opportunity for the younger generation to come through.  I think at the top of the pile this may be the exciting young German Alexander Zverev.

He comes into the tournament as one of the few players this season to have defeated Roger Federer and is currently the youngest player in the ATP Top 10.

There are 2 former winners of the US Open bar Murray, Federer and Nadal in the field.

Juan Martin del Potro is still only 28 years old and won the US Open in 2009.  Even more recently in 2014 Marin Cilic was a winner of the US Open.  Even though he made the final of Wimbledon in 2017 I cannot see him being mentally and physically strong enough to go another 2 weeks in a grand slam.

Another player with questionable mental fragility is Nick Kyrgios.  Undoubtedly talented there are serious questions raised about his temperament when the going gets tough.  In a potentially 5 set tennis match in a slam this temperament is often called into question.

Tip of the Day

My tip to win the US Open 2017 is Alexander Zverev.
