January Transfer Window 2018 – 5 Premier League Signings

The floodgates haven’t opened yet, but the January Transfer Window is underway! The biggest news so far is Philippe Coutinho’s departure from Liverpool to Barcelona. Here’s a look at 5 players arriving, or moving, in the Premier League this month. How will they fare?

Virgil van Dijk – Southampton to Liverpool - £75million

Jürgen Klopp has finally got his man, but he didn’t come cheap. In fact, van Dijk became the most expensive defender in football history. Is he worth it? Liverpool needed a world-class centre-back and the Dutchman is certainly one of the best around. van Dijk showed his quality in a dream debut against Everton on Friday night. Not only did he keep things tight at the back, but he also scored the winner.

Cenk Tosun – Besiktas to Everton - £27million

Is he another attacking midfielder? No, he’s a striker! Everton finally have a replacement for Romelu Lukaku. So, what do we know about him? Tosun is a Turkish international reaching his goalscoring peak. After grabbing 24 goals last season, he’s on 14 goals already this season. But scoring in the Süper Lig is one thing; scoring in the Premier League is something very different.

Ross Barkley – Everton to Chelsea - £15million

For that kind of money, Barkley is definitely a risk worth taking for Chelsea. But is this a good move for Barkley too? With the World Cup coming up in June, the English attacker needs lots of game-time. Will he get that at Stamford Bridge? We’ll have to wait and see. Álvaro Morata and Eden Hazard are guaranteed starters, but there may be a third spot up for grabs. Barkley will have to muscle out Willian and Pedro first, though.

Fousseni Diabaté – Gazelec Ajaccio to Leicester City - £3.5million

On the face of it, Diabaté might not be the most exciting signing of the January Transfer Window. He’s a 22-year-old attacker with 3 goals in 18 games in the French Ligue 2 this season. However, Leicester beat a host of European clubs to sign Diabaté. The Mali international can play out wide or through the middle. It doesn’t look good for Kelechi Iheanacho.

Terence Kongolo – Monaco to Huddersfield Town – Loan

The Huddersfield defence has looked pretty solid this season, but it’s always nice to have another option. In Kongolo, David Wagner has picked up a tall, strong, experienced centre-back, who will offer good competition for Christopher Schindler and Mathias Jørgensen. The Dutch international impressed on his debut in the FA Cup against Bolton on Saturday.
