Nunthorpe Group 1 Stakes – Day 3 Ebor Meeting

Nunthorpe Joy for Frankie?

The Nunthorpe brings us to possibly the most anticipated race of the whole Ebor meeting.

From the USA is the Wesley Ward trained Lady Aurelia.  From the UK is the Charlie Hills’ trained Battaash.

Lady Aurelia comes here with the impressive form figures of 4 wins from 5 races.  Her  only defeat came when she attempted 6f in the Cheveley Stakes at Newmarket in September 2016 and was caught in the final 100 yards eventually going down by 2l.  All of her 4 wins have come over the 5f distance.  They have also come over ground varying from Soft, Firm, Good to Firm so any going should be suitable for her.

Her last race was an impressive 3l victory in the Group 1 King’s Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot in which Washington DC came a disappointing 15th.

Coupled with the renowned jockeyship of Frankie Dettori is this just a case of steering this Sprint Queen homeward bound down the Knavesmire?

Or Nunthorpe Glory for Crowley?

Standing in the way of potential Nunthorpe glory for Lady Aurelia is Battaash.

This season has seen a dramatic turnaround in form for the Hamdan Al Maktoum gelding.  He has won 3 from 3 this season.  2 of these wins have been on Good to Firm (Firm in Places) and 1 on Soft going so again like Lady Aurelia going should be of no concern.

Last time Battaash won the Group 2 King George at Goodwood.  He comes up against some of those rivals again in this race.  I fully expect him to maintain the form and see off Washington DC and Marsha once again.

Nunthorpe Others of Note?

Marsha is a consistent type of horse.  Sir Mark Prescott’s filly has raced 15 times and only finished out of the frame twice.  The issue is she has only finished first in those races 6 times.  She is one to note for those wanting to play for EW money.

Profitable is another horse who seems to have been the “nearly” horse this season.  So far he has had 3 second places which have included defeats to both of the market leaders.

Tip of the Day

I think that Battaash is still improving and the manner of his victory last time out will see him overcome the American challenger Lady Aurelia.
