Can Order Be Restored To Irish St Leger?
Can Order of St George go one better than last year and win the Irish St Leger?
He runs once again against his conqueror in this race last year Wicklow Brave. Since then they have raced against each other and as recently as August this year. Order of St George ran out an easy winner on that occasion winning by 4.75l and beating Wicklow Brave by 9.75l.
What was noticeable in the defeat last year was the tactics employed by Frankie Dettori. He raced his mount from the front and did not allow Aiden O’Brien’s horse to settle in the small 4 horse field.
This years renewal sees 10 horses so that tactic may not work as well and other rival horses also come into the equation.
O’Brien Anguish at Irish St Leger
The Irish St Leger is one of the few Group 1 one race in Ireland and England that Aiden O’Brien has not dominated in recent times. Whilst his record in the last 10 years is still good (3 wins) it pales into insignificance when compared to his exploits in other Group 1 races.
He will want to avenge last years defeat where Order of St George was turned over at odds of 1-7 and rarely in a field of 10 do you see O’Brien only have 1 runner.
The field for the Irish St Leger is nicely split 50/50 between the UK and Ireland currently.
Torcedor for me looks the pick of the Irish horses. Prior to coming 5th in the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot the gelding had won 2 from 2. Whilst the formbook would discount Torcedor never say never as Wicklow Brave would testify too!
Sir Michael Stoute sends over Dartmouth from the UK and he looks the pick of the bunch for me. He has a very strong record with 9 wins from 17 runs. His most recent run saw him go down by a nose at York in the Lonsdale Cup. This shows that despite only 1 win in 3 runs this year his form is strong.
Tip of the Day
It is no surprise to see my tip of the day is ORDER OF ST GEORGE.
