Irish Oaks 2018 – Curragh Saturday 21st July

Irish Oaks Sixth Success for O’Brien?

Aiden O’Brien will be aiming for his sixth Irish Oaks.  These have all come since 2006.

In a field of just 7 runners O’Brien has 3 runners going to post.  2 of the 3 certainly have strong chances of giving him the 6th win and emulating Sir Michael Stoute.

These 2 fillies are Magic Wand and Forever Together.  This will be the 3rd time these 2 have met on the racecourse this season and the score currently stands at 1 victory each.

Magic Wand was an impressive victor of the Cheshire Oaks beating Forever Together by 3.75l on that day.  One has to remember the quirky nature of that track though.  Also that on that day Magic Wand did make all.   Forever Together was never given a clear run on that day and was running on well at the end.

The next time they met was the Oaks at Epsom Downs.  Here the form was reversed as Forever Together was the filly who impressed.  She thumped her stablemate by 11l who eventually trailed in 4th.

Donnacha O’Brien will be looking for his 3rd classic win of 2018 having already claimed the 2000 Guineas and The Oaks this season.  Can he make it a treble?

Since that race both have appeared once on the racecourse.  Magic Wand won the Ribblesdale at Royal Ascot and interestingly this was on Good to Firm ground.  Whereas Forever Together was turned over at the Curragh on Good to Firm Ground at whilst running in the Pretty Polly on July 1st.

The step up to 1m 4f may well prove to be in Forever Together’s advantage.

I think that Magic Wand may prove prove too strong on this occasion and will find the going in her favour.

Bye Bye Baby is the 3rd filly for O’Brien but was beaten comprehensively in the Pretty Polly.  Although 3rd in the Oaks at Epsom I would be very surprised if she were to get close to Magic Wand on Saturday.

Irish Oaks - Who Can Stop BallyDoyle?

Of the 4 other runners in the race one stands out.  This is the William Haggas trained Sea of Class.

Whilst she has only won 2 listed races so far Haggas obviously sees something in her to send her over to challenge the 2 O’Brien stalwarts.  Both wins have been on Good to Firm going.

Although over 1m 2f the step up to 1m 4f seems a natural progression.

The remaining 3 fillies in the field are Mary Tudor trained by Willie McCreery.  Romiyna by Dermot Weld and Tissiak trained by Joseph O’Brien complete the field.

All 3 can currently be backed at 25/1 and above and I think that reflects their chances.  I would be very surprised if any of these 3 got themselves into the mix.

Irish Oaks Tip of the Day

MY TIP OF THE DAY FOR THE IRISH OAKS 2018 IS FOR MAGIC WAND TO WIN.

Generally available at 6/4 to win at most bookmakers.
