Grand National 2018 – Saturday 14th April Aintree

Grand National 2018 likely contenders

The Grand National 2018 looks likely to be run on soft going.  With the news that Minella Rocco, Vicente and Beeves were all pulled out before the 1pm declarations the market has changed slightly.

The new top weight at 11st 10lb is Blaklion.  Nigel Twiston-Davies horse will relish these conditions.  He was unfortunate last year when he looked to have the race in his hands but ran out of steam and faded ultimately finishing in 4th.  Since then he has returned and won over the National course.  He won the Becher Handicap by an impressive 9l in heavy going. Currently priced around 11/1 he is likely to prove very popular.

Gordon Elliot will be looking to win his second Grand National after Silver Birch’s win in 2007.  His main hope is Tiger Roll.  Davy Russell will be hoping to guide the horse round in place of regular jockey Keith Donoghue who cannot do the weight of 10st 12lb.  The horse won the Cross country chase at Cheltenham where the going was Soft/Heavy but the Aintree National fences are a different proposition.  Never gone further than 3m 6f which is also a negative.  I feel that 11/1 which is being bandied is quite skinny.

Anibale Fly arrives here on the back of a hugely creditable 3rd in the Gold Cup at Cheltenham.  Whilst never getting anywhere near the front 2 that day this was still a career best performance and as such has thrust him towards the top of the market.  My main concerns are this is only his 3rd run in the UK.  He only has 3 wins from 11 runs over fences.  Finally he has never ran further than 3m 2f and that was last time out, how much has that taken out of him?

Grand National 2018 horses of interest

Raz De Maree is now 13yo.  He has won the Welsh Grand National this season. Therefore stamina is no issue and he will love the going.  Last year he was unfortunate to unseat the jockey at Bechers and I feel that with an experienced jockey on board in Robbie Powers he is great value at 33/1.

Ucello Conti will likely attract a splurge of cash with jockey Daryl Jacob in fine form so far this week.  However I feel that the horse is too erratic and will hit one fence too many around this course.  Now available around 20/1 the value has also gone when it was double that earlier this week.

I Just Know trained by Sue Smith who has already won a Grand National with Auroras Encore is one I like the look of.  He won the West Yorkshire National in January quite convincingly by 15l.  He then went for a spin over hurdles and came 2nd in heavy going at Uttoxeter.  He will love the going and although he pulled up at this meeting last year I think that the horse has come on for that experience. Currently available around the 20/1 mark.
