O’Brien to Win Epsom Derby Again?
Aidan O’Brien has won 3 of the last 5 runnings of the Epsom Derby. He has 6 runners again for Saturday. Without appearing too rude I am ruling out the prospects of The Anvil and Wings of Eagles on their previous runs.
This leaves O’Brien with Cliffs of Moher, Capri, Douglas Macarthur and Venice Beach. Cliffs of Moher is likely to be at the head of the market come 4.30pm Saturday. Whilst having had only 3 runs in his career 2 of those have been quite impressive. He scorched away from OrderofThegarter to win by over 5l at Leopardstown in October last year and that form has been franked this year with that horse appearing twice and winning both times. His only appearance this year was in the Dee Stakes at Chester. Whilst only winning by 1.5l he was going away at the end and Chester is a different course entirely to negotiate to Epsom.
Capri started last year very well with 3 wins in his first 4 races. In his appearances this season he has been found wanting and has come 4th and 3rd respectively.
Both times he has come up against Douglas Macarthur. In the first meeting Macarthur came a 0.5l 2nd in the race and won the next race they met up in. His form is the opposite of Capri in that he started last year poorly and this year appears to have come out and found form early season as a 3yr old.
The final horse in O’Briens quartet is Venice Beach. This horse has ran 3 times recently and performed well each time. This culmintated in winning the Chester Vase by 1.25l.
Epsom Derby Dark Horses?
Some are saying this is the most open Derby in years. This is shown by the market. If the favourite wins and returns at 4/1 this will be the biggest SP this century! Other horses to note in the race I think are the John Gosden trained Cracksman. Again a lightly raced horse but has the advantage of a win on the course and against one of his major rivals Permian. Since that short head defeat the Mark Johnson horse has gone on to win a listed and a Group 2 race so has franked the form of Cracksman whilst enhancing his own chances.
I think that Aidan O’Brien has set Cliffs of Moher out for this race and he will be very hard to beat.
