US Open Golf 2nd Golf Major – Erin Hills

Erin Hills - Beauty or Beast?

Erin Hills hosts the 2nd Major of the golf season.

The course itself is only 11 years old.  It has come in for some criticism from some of the players already who fear it may be play too tough in the rough!

Rory McIlroy responded by saying the fairways were amongst the widest he had seen and if you couldn’t hit them then you shouldn’t be playing here!

Erin Hills has the potential to be lengthened to play over 8000 yards but will still play at just under 7700 yards for the opening round on Thursday.  This will obviously bring in some of the bigger hitters amongst the field.

The Contenders?

The main contenders according to the bookmakers are the usual suspects. Dustin Johnson, Rory McIlroy, Jordan Spieth and Jason Day make up the head of the market.

I think the value may lie elsewhere.  Another aspect to look at are what EW terms the bookmaker you bet with is offering you. This can vary from 1/4 odds 1st 5 places to 1/5 odds 1st 8 places.

Therefore I am going to look towards Europe for my selection.  My selection for Erin Hills is Justin Rose.

He has previously won this tournament in 2013. He also had that fantastic duel with Garcia at the Masters in April.  Whilst not the longest driver on the tour (ranked 27th),  he is in the Top 10 for average scoring round on the tour (69.8).  He is also ranked No 1 on the tour interestingly for bounceback which I now know to mean is picking up a shot immediately after dropping one.  This shows his mental strength.  He is also ranked 6th on the tour for par breakers which is going to be very important on this course I feel.

Justin Rose Win/EW US Open Golf. Generally available 25/1 (1st 8 places)
