Tottenham v West Ham – Sky Sports 4th January

Tottenham to continue fine festive run?

Tottenham will look to make it 4 wins from 4 over the festive period.

If they do so they will consolidate 5th position in the league and heap pressure on those above.  Depending on results this evening in the Arsenal v Chelsea game they could find themselves only 4 points from 2nd place having had their bad run in late October/early November.

During that run they only picked up 4 points from a possible 15.  They suffered defeats to both Manchester teams as well as North London rivals Arsenal.

Now they face West Ham.  In recent seasons the Hammers have been a bogey team for Tottenham.

In fact Tottenham have not done the double over West Ham since 2012/2013.  West Ham always seem to up their game when Tottenham are the opposition and their most recent meeting was  a prime example of this.

They met in the 4th round of the League Cup and Tottenham scored within 5 minutes and were 2-0 up at HT.

West Ham in the 2nd half were a different team and ran out 3-2 winners stunning the home crowd.

I cannot see that being repeated here as Tottenham in the league know how important points are.

The Wembley hoodoo that many spoke of at the start of the season has been broken.  In fact they have only lost the 1 league game at home to Chelsea and that was the 1st home game of the season.

In Harry Kane they have probably the best striker in Europe.  He will also be chomping at the bit having only been a substitute against Swansea and missing out on his “customary” goal!

Added to that Dele Alli looks like coming back into form and Erik Lamela is getting fitter and stronger in each game.

Hammers Hoodoo to continue over Tottenham?

As detailed above West Ham have a reasonable record against Tottenham in recent times.

If this is to continue they will need to be on top form.  They will also need Andy Carroll to be firing on all cylinders.  His 2 goals against West Brom in the last match were his first since April 1.

What is worth noting however is that he has 8 goals in 8 starts in the month of January.  Perhaps he likes the cold weather?

The issue for West Ham is still in defence.  I would worry for a team that concedes 3 to goal shy Bournemouth and Newcastle (36 and 29 goals respectively).

They have improved defensively since David Moyes came in and did keep 3 clean sheets in a row including meeting against Arsenal and Chelsea in that run in December.

However Tottenham have pace, craft and guile in a lot of positions and I think West Ham will struggle to keep them at bay for the full 90 minutes.

West Ham may look at this game as one they are happy to write off but know that their fans will not really allow this to happen so will probably be forced into playing a stronger team than they want to.

Tip of The Day

My tip for TOTTENHAM v WEST HAM is for HARRY KANE TO SCORE 1ST & TOTTENHAM TO WIN
