English Teams in Champions League on Tuesday Part I
2 of the 3 English teams playing on Tuesday face tough away fixtures.
Liverpool are away to Sevilla and Tottenham are away to Borussia Dortmund.
Meanwhile Manchester City are at home against the whipping boys Fetenoord.
Liverpool know that a draw will likely be enough to see them through to the next stage of the competition. However a defeat would then see them thrown into what would effectively become a knockout tie against Spartak Moscow on Matchday 6.
So far their form in this competition has been patchy. 2 draws against Spartak and Sevilla were overshadowed somewhat by the extraordinary 7-0 away victory against NK Maribor in October.
Sevilla came to Anfield in October and were unlucky in some ways to leave with only a point. Liverpool started well and should have been out of sight in the first 20 minutes. Their profligacy in front of goal and deficiencies in defence which have haunted them all season saw them thankful in the end for the final whistle. Certainly in the final 10 minutes it looked more likely that Sevilla would be getting a winner than Liverpool.
It was somewhat surprising for them to then go out and get thrashed 5-1 by Spartak Moscow. They did though gain some revenge by winning 2-1 in the return fixture.
With Sevilla knowing they face the whipping boys Maribor in the final fixture and going well in La Liga I think they will be happy to settle for a draw here.
As we know Liverpool like to play a high pressing game and this will not suit them. I think this will end up another 2-2 draw.
English Teams in Champions League on Tuesday Part II
Tottenham also face a hard fixture away from home. The major difference for them is they have already qualified for the next stage.
Dortmund have been one of the tournaments great disappointments. So far they have only picked up 2 points from 4 fixtures and that was against APOEL Nicosia.
Spurs may see this as an opportunity to rest players knowing they have a home fixture against Nicosia to get top spot in the group.
I can see Dortmund winning this match to ensure that they still have European football to look forward to after Christmas.
English Teams in Champions League on Tuesday Part III
The final English team playing on Tuesday is Manchester City. Like Spurs they have already qualified with some impressive group victories under their belt. They are guaranteed top spot in their group and have the depth in squad to rotate and still win this fixture against the pointless Feyenoord with comparative ease.
Tip of the Day
My English team to win on Tuesday in the Champions League is MANCHESTER CITY -2 GOALS on the handicap.
This is generally available at 10/11 with most bookmakers.
