Juventus defensively too strong?
Juventus come into this match in a much better frame of mind than when they face Barcelona 2 years ago. Then Barcelona beat Antonio Conte’s men 3-1. This team is much changed though the core of team remains the same. Buffon, Marchisio and Bonucci all played in that match and will want to give the Old Lady of Turin their 2nd Champions League. Incredibly for a team of Juventus’s stature they have only ever one the pinnacle of European football twice, 1985 against Liverpool 1-0 and 1996 against Ajax on penalties. A goalkeeper of Buffon’s stature surely deserves to have a winners medals to look back on?
If they do go on to win the trophy they will win their first ever treble of Scudetto, Coppa Italia and Champions League. This could be added pressure.
Incredibly they have only conceded 3 goals in 12 Champions League matches and only since the group stages. In that period they have gone away to Porto and won 2-0, Monaco and won 2-0 and drew with Barcelona 0-0. Those are very impressive statistics.
Real - The Champions curse?
It is well documented that since the inception of the Champions League in 1992/93 no team has defended the trophy. Real Madrid aim to put that right on Saturday. I think if they were playing any other team in Europe bar Juventus they would be odds on to do so.
Their midfield and attack is renowned but their frailties in defence are also well known. They have conceded in 11 of 12 Champions League matches this season.
How many teams with the mindset of Juventus have Real Madrid come across in Europe or at home this season? Will Cristiano Ronaldo be able to keep running against a well drilled Italian defence who give nothing away?
Madrid are also going for their own unique double. This could be their first La Liga and European Cup/Champions League in 59 years.
I think that Juventus will be too strong defensively for Real Madrid and the curse will live on for another year.
