Hamilton takes Silverstone by storm

In what was Hamilton’s lowest ever starting position win, Silverstone may well be the crowning moment in his comeback against fellow teammate Nico Rosberg. Whilst the race started with Rosberg in pole position, a gearbox failure led to him retiring early and Hamilton moved to within 4 points of him in Drivers’s Championship Standings.

The race itself was packed with action and thrills from the start when Kimi Räikkönen managed to run wide on the Wellington straight and crashed into the barriers after he hit a bump. He then proceeded to spin back into the oncoming traffic and it was Massa who found himself in problems next when he attempted to swerve away but severely damaged his car when he himself spun and made heavy contact with the Ferrari. With the guardrail badly damaged, the race was stopped for an hour while repairs were made and then later restarted.

It took only a little while longer for Rosberg to be plagued by the Mercedes problems and suffer an early retirement leaving Hamilton to close the gap on him in the standings. In fact he did so with a 30-second lead over runner-up Valtteri Bottas (who himself secured his highest ever Formula 1 place).

Despite Rosberg having to retire early – the Constructors’ Championship standings suffered almost no impact with Mercedes leading by 326 points to Red Bull-Renault who still languish behind on 168. It seems that the sole focus this season will be on the Mercedes duo who have had just as much drama off the track as they have on it. After their earlier altercations when Rosberg caught Hamilton, the narrow lead will surely fill the papers in the morning and speculation will be rife on whether Rosberg can come back from this defeat or whether this in fact spells the start of a Hamilton victory in the making.
