Showcase Meeting heralds return of the Jump Season
For me the Showcase Meeting which takes place on Friday 26th and Saturday 27th means that that the jumps season is finally beginning in full swing. The flat season bar the Breeders Cup is now in the distance.
This is potentially our first chance to look at horses who in a little over 4 and a half months we will hopefully be roaring on to success in the Championship races at the same course.
On Friday the Showcase Meeting has 7 races to kick us off.
Race 1 sees some heavyweight trainers throw their hats in the ring.
Paul Nicholls, Gordon Elliott and Nicky Henderson all have highly rated novice hurdlers in this race.
Blu Cavalier suffered a shocked defeat when a heavy odds on favourite at Newton Abbott last time out (2/13f). However prior to that it had showed fine form in putting together a run of 3 victories and I think can be forgiven that blip when you consider the ground was Good to Firm.
Dinons is one of 2 runners for Gordon Elliot and for me by far his best opportunity. Currently on a run of 4 victories, these have come with an accumulative victory length of 66.5! 3 of those victories have come on Good going which is the predicted going for the Showcase Meeting on Friday.
Nicky Henderson also has 2 runners but for me his best chance lies with Haul Away. Both wins this season have come at Fontwell Park. However what has impressed me was that the gelding has lead and then passed. However on both occasions he has fought back again to win. On both occasions he has turned over the favourite in the race as well and they were well clear of the field. The wins have come on varying ground. Good to Firm for 1 win and Good to Soft the other which show great versatility.
Showcase Meeting Standouts – Day 1
Along with race 1 the other race I am most looking forward to watching at the Showcase Meeting on Friday is race 4.
Currently 13 runners got to post in this Novices Chase over 3m at 3.45pm.
Lil Rockerfeller looks likely to go off a warm favourite. He should find this a lot easier than when he last appeared his in the Stayers Hurdle in March 2018. He has won his last 2 appearances on the racecourse and both were on good going.
For me the main dangers appear to be the father and son duos. Dan & Harry Skelton team up with Shannon Bridge. Nigel and Sam Twiston Davies team up with Arctic Gold.
However it will be a huge surprise if the favouriute does not oblige in this race.
