Oliver start fine is “embarrassing rubbish”

Trainer Henry Oliver was fined £140 at Uttoxeter on Saturday for waving his arms at one of his horses to encourage him to start. The stewards’ decision to impose the fine is yet another black mark for the British Horseracing Authority. Sir Anthony McCoy, 20-time champion jockey, called it “embarrassing rubbish.” Oliver was found guilty of misconduct. He’d encouraged Burrenbridge Hotel to line up by waving his arms behind the horse. The horse had planted himself near a fence a

Pegasus World Cup is Gulfstream highlight

The $9 million Pegasus World Cup takes place on Saturday at Gulfstream in Florida, over nine furlongs on the dirt. Favourite Accelerate looks to have the beating of his eleven rivals. He has won his last four races, including the Breeders’ Cup Classic in November at Churchill Downs. His only question mark is that it will be his first time running at Gulfstream. However, he should have no problem handing the track. Gunnevera was second to Accelerate in the Breeders’

Thyestes Chase is Gowran’s showpiece

Gowran Park holds its big race of the year on Thursday, the Thyestes Chase. Its name recalls a horse who ran just twice – as a two-year-old on the Flat. Thyestes won his only two races, at Sandown and Goodwood, in 1930. He was then retired to stud due to injury. His owner later presented the Thyestes trophy to the Kilkenny Horse Show. A horse owned by John McEnery won it. The McEnery family then donated the trophy to Gowran

Jockeys to follow in coming weeks

Finding jockeys to follow is often a good guide for picking winners. It helps when you can spot a rising star in the early stages of their career. Right now, two young jockeys to follow over jumps are Rex Dingle and Charlie Deutsch. Dingle is based with Anthony Honeyball but gets plenty of outside rides. At the time of posting he’s had nine winners since the start of the year from just 22 rides. At one stage last week he’d

Cheltenham week dominates betting year

It’s no surprise that the Cheltenham Festival dominates the betting year in terms of turnover. But just how much Cheltenham week dominates is shown in the latest figures posted by bookmakers Ladbrokes and Coral. Of course, the Grand National stands alone at the head of the top betting races. It always will because it’s the “people’s race”. It’s the one race of the year in which the general public have a bet. They may not know the difference between Derby

Champion Hurdle Trial 2019 – Haydock Park

The Champion Hurdle Trial has now been renamed The New One Unibet Hurdle (Champion Hurdle Trial). This is in honour of the well loved horse trained by Nigel Twiston Davies who won the last 4 runnings of this race (2015-2018). Currently 10 runners go to post and the first 6 in the market are all single figures. Silver Streak is the current favourite and is a consistent sort for trainer Evan Williams.  In 13 runs he has only finished out of the frame

No-deal Brexit – how would it affect racing?

A no-deal Brexit could be bad news for racing. The defeat of Theresa May’s Brexit deal on Tuesday night leaves us in limbo land. How could it affect the sport of horse racing? It’s a lot to answer in a short blog but let’s look at three examples. Michael Gove has warned of a threat to the Grand National if Britain leaves the EU without a deal. In reply to a question in the House of Commons about whether Irish

Clarence House Chase could be a match

Saturday’s Clarence House Chase will have no more than four runners. That’s all that’s left at the forfeit stage for Ascot’s big race. It will be the smallest field since the race acquired Grade 1 status in 2008. It was a limited handicap prior to that. Since 2008 it has only produced single-figure fields with eight of the last 11 runnings having odds-on favourites. Of course, Altior is the big name and he will bring the crowds to Ascot. His

Who will win the Classic Chase at Warwick?

Warwick hosts the Classic Chase on Saturday, its biggest race of the year. Who is going to win? Renamed the Classic Chase in 2004, it began life as the Warwick National in 1973. Initially run over four miles one furlong, the distance was reduced to three miles five furlongs in 1989. The race is a trial for the Grand National. However, only one of its winners has gone on to win the Grand National, One For Arthur in 2017. Last

ITV Racing dream team – who’d be in yours?

What would be your ITV Racing dream team? It’s two years since they over from Channel 4 Racing, who had covered the sport since 1983. After Channel 4 ditched Highflyer as its production company in 2011, its racing coverage became dull. The presenters were stuck in a truck away from the action and the show suffered as a result. Two or three pundits sat by a computer screen quickly became boring. It was a shadow of what had gone before.

Racing Post Monday Jury’s view on TV channels

Yesterday’s Racing Post Monday Jury page included a question seeking the jury’s early impressions of Racing TV and Sky Sports Racing, the rebranded satellite channels. Few of the five-strong panel had had chance to watch much of it. Nonetheless, from what they’d seen, their views were positive. It is still early days and, as Paul Nicholls’ assistant Harry Derham pointed out, it is far too soon to be judging them when they have only been going for a week. Trainer

Sussex National is Plumpton’s highlight

Plumpton holds its big race of the year on Sunday, the 3m 4½f Sussex National, at 2.40. It’s no more than an average 0-135 long-distance chase but it has an open look. The Two Amigos is the likely favourite, based on his win over 3m 6½f at Exeter on soft ground last month. He jumped well that day but is up 10lb for the win. Having said that, he made all and scored by four lengths, so the Sussex National

TV coverage of horse racing in 2019

The arrival of the new year has brought changes to TV coverage of horse racing. Of the two satellite channels, Racing UK is now Racing TV, while At The Races is now Sky Sports Racing. But it goes deeper than mere changes of name. Racing UK was rebranded Racing TV in December and thus carried its new name into the new year. The main change from New Year’s Day is the arrival of all the Irish tracks. There was a

New Year’s Day racing has plenty to offer

It’s always good to start the year with a winner. With eight meetings to choose from including two in Ireland, there’s plenty of choice for finding one or two on New Year’s Day. Cheltenham New Year’s Day card is a good place to start. Wholestone bids to win the Relkeel Hurdle (3.10) for the second year running and may well do so. However, he has to find more than 20 lengths to reverse form with Clyne when they finished second

Mandarin Chase is best betting race at Newbury

The Mandarin Chase is the main betting race at Newbury on Saturday. The 3m 2f handicap dates back to 1963 and recalls one the best chasers of all time. Trained by Fulke Walwyn, Mandarin won the 1962 Cheltenham Gold Cup, the King George VI Chase twice and the Hennessy Gold Cup twice. But his greatest triumph came in the 1962 Grand Steeplechase de Paris, when the rubber bit snapped in his mouth after the third fence. Despite the lack of

Boxing Day tips for eight meetings

There are eight race meetings in England on Boxing Day, plus three in Ireland. It’s a real feast of racing, plenty to get your teeth into. Some people go mad and pick one horse at each meeting and combine all eight in a Goliath. That’s 247 bets all told – a touch ambitious – but you only need two winners to get a return. So, for what it’s worth, here are some Boxing Day suggestions. Kempton’s Boxing Day card Kempton

Tommy Whittle Chase at Haydock Saturday

Haydock’s Tommy Whittle Chase recalls the name of a former director and chairman of Haydock Park. Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Little Owl landed its first running in 1982. Two more Gold Cup heroes, Forgive ’N’ Forget and The Thinker, also won it in the 1980s. Prior to 1995 the Tommy Whittle had Grade 2 status. It then became a handicap and its winners in the 1990s included One Man and Suny Bay. However, the winners over the last 20 years

Long Walk Hurdle tops Ascot’s Saturday card

Saturday’s Ascot highlight is the JLT Hurdle. However, the registered title is the Long Walk Hurdle. It takes its name from The Long Walk, an avenue of trees in Windsor Great Park. It was first run in 1965 as a handicap. Changed to a conditions race in 1971, it attained Grade 1 status in 1990. The race is a top trial for the Stayers’ Hurdle at Cheltenham. Since 1971, five Long Walk winners have gone on to do the double.

Harry Fry appears to have Uknowwhatimeanharry back approaching some kind of form.  I would still question whether he is anywhere near the kind of horse and/or form that saw him win this race and others in 2016. However he did win the Long Distance Hurdle at Newbury last time

Caspian Caviar Gold Cup at Cheltenham Saturday

The Caspian Caviar Gold Cup is the big handicap chase on Cheltenham’s Saturday card. It’s a race with a long history, dating back to 1963, but has had so many different titles that it’s often referred to simply as the ‘December Gold Cup’. Those of a certain age will recall it as the Massey-Ferguson Gold Cup, a name it retained until 1980. During the 80s it was known as the Kennedy Construction Gold Cup, the Glen International Gold Cup and
