Day one of Cheltenham is finally here

It’s day one of Cheltenham and the week’s first sure thing has already obliged, with the cost of the Racing Post going up by 10 pence, as it does every year. When The Sporting Life put up its price, there was a front-page announcement stating the reason. However, the Racing Post just does it and hopes nobody notices.

Furthermore, the second sure thing about Cheltenham is that ITV’s Alice Plunkett won’t get through a day without using the word ‘emotional’.

However, today is when the talking stops and the action begins. The preview nights are over. Day one of Cheltenham is just a few hours away.

What’s going to win? For what it’s worth, here’s my Lucky 15 (didn’t they used to call it a Yankee?) for the first day. The Druids Nephew in the Ultima Handicap Chase, Petit Mouchoir in the Champion Hurdle, Apple’s Jade in the Mares’ Hurdle, and Beware The Bear in the National Hunt Chase.

Let battle commence. Good luck everyone.
