To the delight of football fans around the world, there’s another weekend of exciting action in store, albeit behind closed doors. However, this week marks the return of La Liga, which is a significant step in the right direction. We have picked out several games to keep an eye out for this weekend; with matches across multiple leagues, spread across many countries set to get underway.
Sevilla vs Betis
Sevilla vs Betis on Thursday, June 11 marks the return of La Liga, with football fans around the world rejoicing. And, the match isn’t a nothing game, as Sevilla are currently occupying third place in Spain’s topflight. Recent form goes out of the window due to the long layoff. Still, a win for Sevilla against midtable Betis will enable them to keep the likes of Real Sociedad, Getafe, and Atletico Madrid at bay temporarily.
Hoffenheim vs RB Leipzig
We head back to Bundesliga football for our pick of the action on Friday, June 12, with Hoffenheim hosting RB Leipzig in a game where the result will matter to both. Hoffenheim are two points adrift of a Europa League qualification spot; while Leipzig continues to push Dortmund for second place. A draw will suit neither, and recent form for both has been steady.
Mallorca vs Barcelona
It’s back to La Liga football for us on Saturday, because let’s face it, we all want to see Barcelona in action once again. They lead the way in Spain’s topflight, and head to Mallorca looking to take three points, against a team battling for survival. Real Madrid is two points adrift of Barca, so, the Catalan giants can’t afford to slip up. If Barca wins, the onus will be on Madrid to follow suit on Sunday.
Mainz vs Augsburg
Mainz vs Augsburg in the Bundesliga on Sunday is a pivotal game at the wrong end of the division. Neither side is safe, with Mainz one place and three points above the relegation playoff place. And Augsburg a further point better off. It’s another football game where a point will not suffice. So, expect both sides to go out for the win.
Real Madrid vs Eibar
Also, on Sunday, Real Madrid take on Eibar at the Bernabeu. We expect Barca to beat Mallorca, which means Real will have to match their result to stay in contention as title challengers. Eibar, however, are two points above the relegation zone, so, they need to pick up as many points between now and the end of the season if they are to remain in La Liga for another year.
Bielefeld vs Dresden
We end our weekend football preview with Monday’s top vs bottom clash in Bundesliga 2. It is a game which means everything to both sides in a manner of speaking; as the home team continue to move closer to promotion to the Bundesliga as champions. Dresden, on the other hand, are bottom of the table and five points adrift of safety. They need points and fast.
