Tottenham to edge closer to European football for next season?
Tottenham host their bitter North London rivals Arsenal in the early Saturday kick off.
Before then Tottenham go to Chelsea this evening (Wednesday) and Arsenal play AFC Bournemouth.
The gap between the 2 clubs is currently 7 points. By Saturday afternoon there is a feeling that could be down to 1 point. For Tottenham to be further ahead than that they are going to have to do something they have not done since season 1970/71.
That is to do the double over Chelsea.
When you think about it, that is quite incredible. The quality of the teams that Tottenham have had since then, and yet they have never quite managed to beat Chelsea in the League home and away in the same season.
However you get the impression if they are ever going to rectify that situation, then this season is the perfect opportunity.
Chelsea come into this game once again on the back of a defeat and look a club in turmoil.
Kepa Arrizabalaga hugely undermined manager Maurizio Sarri at Wembley by refusing to be substituted. No one but Sarri himself knows if this was a tactical substitution or if it was down to Kepa being “injured”. Either way neither man comes out of the situation in a positive light.
Tottenham had a great opportunity over the weekend to close the gap on the top two and with the re-introduction of Harry Kane should have blown Burnley away. However once again when presented with an ideal chance to put pressure on Liverpool and Manchester City they were found wanting.
If they are to have any chance of winning the Premier League then they need to perform as well here as they did last season. However that was their first win in 30 attempts at Stamford Bridge.
Also Mauricio Pochettino has lost 8 times against Chelsea which is more than against any other club. However he has beaten Chelsea 4 times. This is more times than every other Tottenham manager combined!!
Tottenham to gain revenge on Gunners?
If Tottenham do beat Chelsea they then have the small matter of Arsenal less than 72 hours later.
Tottenham were on cloud nine at half time at the Emirates. Leading 2-1 they must have thought they would go on and win. However Arsenal came out in the 2nd half and scored 3 without reply.
This is one of the 7 league defeats that Tottenham have suffered this season. Incredibly going into the 28th league game of the season they have yet to draw!
Tottenham will be hoping with another league game under his belt Harry Kane will be firing on all cylinders. He has a phenomenal record against Arsenal. He has scored 8 goals in 8 games. Who would bet against him making it 9 in 9 if not more?
Also with them being 3-0 up in their Champions League match they can afford to give this match their full attention. I expect them to come flying out of the blocks and fly at Arsenal in the first 15/20 minutes. They will hope to put the match to bed by half time and rest key players. The question is in a North London derby will they be allowed to do this?
