Spurs v Juventus – Champions League

Spurs to wobble at Wembley?

Spurs will be looking to complete the task they started in Turin at Wembley on Wednesday evening.

The home team will be hoping to start the match a lot better than they did in Turin when they were 2 goals down after only 9 minutes.  It shows the strength and character of this Spurs team that they were able to claw there way back into the game and indeed were unlucky not win the match.

For many the match turned on Higuain missing the penalty kick on the stroke of half time.  It certainly would have been a different half time team talk for Mauricio Pochettino to deliver if Spurs had gone in 3-1 down instead of 2-1.

However the tie is still on a knife edge.

Spurs are now in a stick or twist position.  Should they attack Juventus and try and kill them off or let Juventus come onto them and try and pick them off on the counter attack?

The problem for Spurs may be if Juventus score the first goal in the game.  I cannot see them being as open again as they were in the first leg.  They will have surely learnt their lessons from that game and will know the problems that Eriksen, Son Heung-min, Dele Alli and Harry Kane amongst others can cause.

Spurs I feel are at their best when attacking teams and cannot rely on keeping Juventus at bay for 90 minutes.  So far this season in the Champions League they have only kept a cleans sheet against APOEL.

They have put 3 goals past Borussia Dortmund, Real Madrid and APOEL in at least 1 game during the group stages so this shows their attacking prowess.

Juventus to go for Spurs Jugular?

If Juventus are to progress past Spurs then they will have to beat their London hoodoo.

In 4 previous Champions league fixtures in London they have failed to win a match.

In 2001 Arsenal defeated them 3-1, 2006 the same team defeated them 2-0 en route to the final.

2009 Chelsea beat them 1-0 before they claimed a 2-2 draw against Chelsea in 2012.  They also lost to Fulham in the quarter final of the UEFA Cup in 2010!!

This could give Spurs a psychological edge but this is a Juventus team that have won Serie A the last 6 years in a row.  They have also only conceded 15 goals in 26 league matches this season.

Incredibly Spurs are still the only team that have scored against Juventus this calendar year!

The only issue that I can foresee is that Juventus are not used to having to attack teams and this may leave them open.  They know that they need to score at least 1 goal to have a chance of qualifying.
