As things stand, it is still unclear as to whether the current Premier League season will reach its completion due to the coronavirus crisis. There is talk of it resuming at some point, games potentially being played behind closed doors and there have also been suggestions the 2019/20 campaign could be declared null and void. In light of this, what does it all mean for Manchester United?
One club which will be hoping the season resumes is Manchester United because as things stand; they are on course to claim a place in the 2020/21 Champions League campaign. Since Bruno Fernandes arrived at Old Trafford, United have hit a rich vein of form. And by gaining entry to Europe’s top club competition next season; they will be able to continue moving in the right direction.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has his critics. There have been suggestions he will be replaced in the Old Trafford hot seat this summer; their current form and recent progress indicate this won’t be the case. It has been very much a journey of ups and downs so far. But Manchester United have made some crucial additions to their playing staff. Plus Solskjaer has shown in the last run of games that he can guide the team to victories as well as clean sheets.
So, with Solskjaer at the helm next season, attentions turn to players who may leave the club. Odion Ighalo will more than likely head out of Old Trafford and back to China. And as far as out of contract players go, Timothy Fosu-Mensah is the only member of the set up whose deal is due to expire.
On The Way Out
Several first-team players have been linked with moves away from Manchester United in recent times; with Phil Jones and Jesse Lingard likely to head out of the club. Jones has failed to nail down a regular starting spot under Solskjaer. And Lingard, who is now represented by super-agent Mino Raiola, has fallen foul of the Norwegian on multiple occasions. Chris Smalling, on loan at Roma, is another player who could make a permanent switch away from Old Trafford as well.
Manchester United & Pogba
Paul Pogba’s future at the club has been up in the air for a long time. And while Solskjaer insists the Frenchman is a part of his plans and that he will stay put; rumours will always suggest a move away is possible. Pogba may be more inclined to continue his career with United after their dramatic return to form following the arrival of fellow midfielder Fernandes. The pair could strike up a fantastic relationship on the pitch, which will be beneficial for all parties.
Manchester United have proven they can make good signings and move in the right direction. The arrivals of Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Harry Maguire and Bruno Fernandes have been crucial. The next step is for more quality to be added elsewhere on the pitch. They need to invest in an out and out goalscorer and a winger at least; with Borussia Dortmund’s Jadon Sancho a possible target. United will also continue their push to attract young talent, with Jude Bellingham on their radar.
