FA Cup Final 2018 – Chelsea v Man Utd

FA Cup Final 2018 – Conte’s Last Hurrah?

Is the FA Cup Final 2018 likely to be Antonio Conte’s last match in charge of Chelsea?

It is incredible to think that it is only a year since Chelsea were lifting the Premier League trophy.  At that point it was inconceivable to think that Conte would in all likelihood be gone a season later.  Even if his team were to go on and lift the FA Cup I believe that he will leave the at the end of this season.

Now to the FA Cup final itself.  Chelsea have a very good record recently against Man Utd in the FA Cup.  They have won the last 3 meetings which were Quarter finals in 2017 and 2013 (after a replay) and the 2007 FA Cup final itself.

However Chelsea come into this FA Cup final off the back of a horror performance against Newcastle in the last league game of the season where they lost 3-0.  One can only hope that the team were saving themselves for this final.

Olivier Giroud will be aiming for a fourth winners medal having won the FA Cup 3 times with Arsenal.  Incredibly he has never lost in 10 appearances at Wembley.  After a slow start at Chelsea he appears to have now found his form and is linking up well with Eden Hazard and Willian.

It is vital if Chelsea are to get a foothold in the game that Eden Hazard performs.  If he gets space and can control the space between the back four and the midfield then Chelsea can certainly get at the the weaker part of the Man Utd team which for me is their back four.

With Conte likely to stick with Giroud over Morata I think Moses and Willian will be on the flanks.  That will leave Fabregas, Kante in the middle and Hazard with a free role.  The defence will be the usual suspects except I believe that Courtois will get the nod over Caballero.

FA Cup Final 2018 – Mourinho’s Incredible Final record to continue?

Jose Mourinho has an incredible record in cup finals.  Of the 14 he has been in as manager he has won 14.  That is an incredible success rate of 86%!

What is noticeable though is that even in the those final is that his style of play still shines through.  Only 4 of those 12 wins have been by 1 goal or more.  I would anticipate tomorrows final to be another match where he would happily accept a 1-0 victory or a win on penalties after extra time.

Mourinho tactics will certainly be dictated to as to whether Romelu Lukaku is declared fit.  In the last 3 league games of the season without him Man Utd only scored 1 goal.  Also now with the news that Anthony Martial has been left out of the France squad for the World Cup you would have to question how confident he would be and his state of mind.

This still leaves Utd with the attacking prowess of Alexis Sanchez, Jesse Lingard (already an FA Cup Final goalscorer winner for Utd)  and Marcus Rashford.

I believe that Lukaku will pay in the lone forward role.  There are injury doubts over Marouane Fellaini and Anthony Martial but both have travelled to Wembley.  Fellaini in particular is a player who can change a match with his aerial ability.

I think with Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic in the middle of the pitch this gives Utd a strong base as long as Pobga does not go missing. Kante for Chelsea we know certainly will not.  That will allow Sanchez and A N Other space on the wings to supply Lukaku.

As I stated before I think the weak point for Utd is their back four.  For that reason I believe that David De Gea will be recalled over Sergio Romero despite the latter playing all the previous FA Cup matches.
