So, the Bundesliga is back, and everyone is happy about it. Viewers from all around the globe tuned in to watch the action unfold live, and they will be doing it all again this weekend. There are some fantastic matches which will take place over several days, as the title race, as well as the battle against relegation, hots up.
Hertha Berlin vs Union Berlin (Fri)
One of the biggest games on the Bundesliga calendar is the Berlin derby between Hertha and Union, and it takes place in the next run of matches in Germany’s topflight. Hertha, managed by Bruno Labbadia, made a winning return to action last week, winning 3-0 against Hoffenheim. Union Berlin lost 2-0 to champions-elect Bayern Munich. But the form book will fly out of the window as the two outfits from Berlin do battle. One place and one position separate them in the league table, and this will only add more spice to what is a tasty encounter.
Freiburg vs Werder Bremen (Sat)
Saturday and Sunday are arguably the busiest matchdays in the Bundesliga this week, and they will likely prove to be significant at both ends of the league table. The match between Freiburg and Werder Bremen is a prime example; with the former pushing for a top-six finish and the latter battling to beat the drop. Freiburg secured an impressive draw against RB Leipzig last time out, while Bremen were hammered 4-1 by a spectacular Bayer Leverkusen. It is more likely Freiburg can achieve their target of finishing fifth than it is Bremen retaining their topflight status; especially as Bremen have lost four from their last five.
Mainz vs RB Leipzig (Sun)
Sunday is another Bundesliga matchday where games will affect both ends of the division. Mainz vs Leipzig is an exciting fixture as the former are hovering above the relegation playoff spot; while Leipzig is three points off Dortmund in second. Recently, both outfits have displayed similar form, with Mainz recording two draws and a win in three; while Leipzig has seen three stalemates occur consecutively. Mainz and Leipzig will both go all out to win, as they have a lot to play for, and if it were a battle based on quality, you would undoubtedly fancy the latter to pick up three points. But Mainz want to keep their heads above water, so, it will come down to who wants it more.
Dortmund vs Bayern Munich (Tues)
The match everyone is talking about right now is the clash at the top of the table. Dortmund, who are second in the league, are taking on Bayern Munich who are leading the way. Both outfits are in superb form, and both have a lot to lose. If Dortmund win, they will go one point behind Bayern and increase the pressure tenfold. If Bayern win, however, it could be the break to settle the title race. And, it is worth considering a draw occurring, as this will open the door for the likes of Monchengladbach, Leipzig and Leverkusen to challenge for second place at a minimum.
