We’re into March madness now, so here’s a look back at the stars of February 2019 across Europe’s Top 5 Leagues.
Premier League – Sergio Agüero, Manchester City
While Liverpool’s front three faltered (with the exception of Sadio Mané), City’s star striker fired home his 10th and 11th Premier League hat-tricks. They didn’t come against relegation fodder either; Agüero’s goals destroyed Top Six rivals Arsenal and Chelsea. Yes, February 2019 was a very good month for the Argentinian. His 7 goals lifted him to the top of the Golden Boot table and City to the top of the Premier League table. Oh and Agüero won his 4th League Cup trophy too.
Shout-outs to: Sadio Mané (Liverpool), Ashley Barnes (Burnley)
La Liga – Jaime Mata, Getafe
As things stand, Getafe sit 4th in the Spanish League, with only Barcelona and Madrid’s 2 biggest clubs ahead of them. That’s an incredible achievement for a club considered to be Atlético and Real’s baby brother. February 2019 was another solid month for Getafe, and for their star man, Jaime Mata, in particular. The 30-year-old forward is in the form of his life, grabbing 4 goals and 2 assists in the 4 games he played last month. At this rate, Mata and his teammates could be playing Champions League football next season.
Shout-outs to: Lionel Messi (Barcelona), Iago Herrerín (Athletic Bilbao)
Bundesliga – Julian Brandt, Bayer Leverkusen
A narrow defeat to Borussia Dortmund was the only disappointment in an otherwise excellent month for Brandt and his Leverkusen team. Their February 2019 started with a surprise 3-1 win over Bayern Munich. Brandt didn’t score that day, but he was Leverkusen’s most creative player and the man of the match. In his next 3 league matches, the 22-year-old added another 3 assists, plus 2 brilliantly-taken goals. Those stats will keep Brandt on Liverpool’s radar this summer.
Shout-outs to: Jérome Roussillon (Wolfsburg), Willi Orban (RB Leipzig)
Serie A – Krzysztof Piątek, AC Milan (pictured)
When Milan replaced Gonzalo Higuaín with Piątek, it felt like a gamble. The former is a proven goalscorer at the highest level; the latter had scored 19 goals during his first half-season at Genoa. Any question marks didn’t last long, though. AC Milan stayed unbeaten throughout February 2019, largely thanks to 5 goals in 4 games from Piątek. The Polish striker’s partnership with Brazilian playmaker Lucas Paquetá is definitely one to watch.
Shout-outs to: Salvatore Sirigu (Torino), Edin Džeko (Roma)
Ligue 1 – Gelson Martins, AS Monaco
Are you watching, Thierry Henry? Since Leonardo Jardim’s return as manager, Monaco have gone 5 games unbeaten and they’ve climbed out of the relegation zone. Martins, on loan from Atlético Madrid, has been key to the revival. The Portuguese winger scored the winner against Nantes, as well as important goals against Montpellier and Lyon. Together, Martins and Monaco are bouncing back.
